I‘m glad I took a break from THE GENERAL‘S MISTRESS instead of bailing on it. Now that I‘ve settled into its rhythm, it‘s exactly what I feel like! Even though it got marketed as general fiction instead of fantasy, it really leans into Elza‘s past lives as it builds steam, too. I wish I‘d read it right after the earlier books in the series so I could be sure which of these characters corresponds to which reincarnated companion.

I waited ages to get my hands on another volume from Graham‘s Numinous World series, where we follow a friend-group of souls through many lifetimes, but I dunno if I‘ve clicked with it. Is it the book? Or is it because it‘s tough to concentrate when you know the majority of voters in the large, powerful country to the south either actively want you in a concentration camp or are willing to allow it because of, like, economics or some shit?

xicanti @BkClubCare thank you, my friend. 1mo
BarbaraJean Hugs from someone in that country to the south. I‘m sorry. Some of us really tried hard for a different result and are blindsided to find ourselves in the minority of voters this election. 💔 1mo
xicanti @BarbaraJean I feel for all of you. There are hard times ahead. 💔 1mo

I found this interesting and loved the setting of the story both as physical locations and timewise. The characters felt like they actually lived in the pages. This is quite a big book and it was fun to read one story for such a long time. It's been awhile since I last did that. I think I'll be reading more Amy Tan at some point. 😊

Started two new books today. I'm travelling again and wanted to pick two books to take with me that are as different as possible. Blue one is historical fiction and the black one is non-fiction that focuses around mafia.

Step back in time with a story about life as a courtesan in early 20th century China. Spanning fifty years, the book follows the life of Violet Minturn, who is forced to separate from her mother and become a virgin courtesan at the start of the revolution.

I have to say I almost bailed at the beginning as it was sooooo slow and I was to the point I didn‘t really care. Eventually, it picked up momentum and found its pace but not fast enough. Sandrine was an interesting enough character I stuck it out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️. Mystery, romance and suspense. #aprilbooklist #readingchallenge2022

KristiAhlers @WJCintron I admit that‘s what drew me to start! 3y

I felt it was too detailed in places and went off on a tangent.

Such a unstable and unsure walk of life, mostly based on youth, beauty and allure, and once those you were gone you didn‘t have much going for you. Securing a wealthy man early in life was absolutely imperative.

I felt sad for these women, rich and beautiful but all could fall down in the blink of an eye.
