What an excellent book—a huge shoutout to the power of women over misogyny early last century, mostly set in #Canada but a few important moments in #Boston. The main character was raised to be a midwife. When a male doctor comes to town, he insists the old ways are dangerous and his newfangled ways (including forceps) are safer. There is so much to unpack about this book a short review cannot do it justice. In general, it speaks to the power ⬇️

Texreader of women in the face of a culture that deems men smarter, stronger, saner, safer, etc. And it does it, for the most part, in a beautiful and subtle way. The book is set during World War I and the Spanish flu. The author doesn‘t miss a beat with current events in Canada and Boston at the time. Easily one of the best books I‘ve read this year. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks 1mo

Brimming with emotion, I refolded the letter and cradled it in my hands. The chestnut colt—I‘d have to think of a name for him—was watching me with an impish look that promised adventure, and I smiled back at him with complete and utter satisfaction. Now this was a day to end all days . . . or to begin them.

Artist Claire has been blackballed by the art world and is thus working creating reproductions of famous paintings for a website. Then someone brings her a painting from the Gardner Museum heist but she believes it‘s a forgery. For whatever reason I dragged my feet to pick up this book and it turns out I loved it! The story is great and the descriptions of the artistic process are fascinating. #ReadYourEbooks

After my skin check yesterday (I have a script for some chemo cream for my nose to start next winter) but before my next appointment with the building manager in my other apartment block to change the battery in the smoke detector as I can‘t reach it) and my 🩰 performances last night, I managed to fit in a trip to Kmart where I got my babies some cheap outfits and an op shop. I think the earrings will work for one of my Xmas dos. Grand total $15.

Trigger warning: all the triggers. Name one, it's in there. As the title states it's really, really dark (I don't know what the German cover should express, tbh). Lehane is working on his characters in this one, sharpening them. But not only the human ones, but also the city all his books are set in: Boston. It's a strong book, well plotted and even if I might forget the story itself I won't forget all the feelings connected to it.

Ruthiella I‘ve only read a couple Lehane books but he does not pull his punches. 2mo

I started this in April at the park on a mood, and finished in August. Fast-paced (for me, I'm slow), good characterization, fun that Spenser consults his degreed, therapist wife on cases to gauge the psychology and possible motivations behind people, and so that he can think about all the details of the case he's learned and piece some sort of puzzle in how to fix the problem and close the case. Odd I'm going for these tough guy characters.
