(2022) It's a historical fantasy set in the ninth century, following the travels of an Icelander across Europe, looking for horses to bring back to Iceland to make his fortune. The author is a medievalist, and brings her knowledge of the time and its literary forms to the story. I am not a medievalist, but do know she delivered a mesmerizing story that feels authentic about ambition, social change, and (of course) horses.

Bookwomble I loved this one ❤️🐎❤️ 3d

Misty's Twilight | Marguerite Henry
Mehso-so

This is a higher so-so. I own the book but out of all of Marguerite Henry's books I've read I've only read it twice (compared to several for the others I own). I guess I just felt a little jilted after reading Misty of Chincoteague, Stormy, Misty's Foal, and others.

Another gem found in a neighborhood #LittleFreeLibrary ! I‘d never even heard of this one, but if Everett writes it I will read it. Grateful today to be outside in the currently fresh air in San Diego, even as I‘m feeling so much sadness for our northern neighbors, including some good friends who lost family homes. 💔

AmyG Devastating 😞 1w
Butterfinger I'm so sorry. It is all so sad. 1w
Hooked_on_books I completely agree about PE. I‘ll read anything he writes. 1w

ImperfectCJ I can relate to the simultaneous gratitude and sadness. Family back east keep asking if we're okay in San Diego, and when I say we are and that our college kid is safe at school so far, too, I feel it acutely, almost a guilt at feeling grateful to be safe (so far) when such destruction is happening only a couple of hours away. And of course knowing that our safety is contingent on something as capricious as wind patterns. 1w
BkClubCare I found this book last year and because it was PE I took it home. Thought it was great. Our hearts go out to all with threats of 🔥- very sad in so many ways. 1w
sarahbarnes I‘ve never heard of this one by him either - what a find! So terrifying what is happening. 💔 My daughter is just south of LA. 1w
monalyisha I always have trouble remembering where Littens are and keeping in mind the little details that make up their lives. It‘s part of why I love #AuldLangSpine. It brings a particular person into focus. I‘m sorry that I‘m learning *now* that you‘re in California, that I didn‘t reach out sooner, and that the details that make up your life are actually quite big right now. Sending love. 💗 Hoping against hope for increased climate justice. 1w
Christine @AmyG @Butterfinger So heartbreaking and beyond overwhelming for those affected. 1w
Christine @Hooked_on_books I feel lucky to have only read three of his so far! So much goodness to come. 1w
Christine @ImperfectCJ Well said. So concerned about what the next few days will bring. 1w
Christine @BkClubCare How fun that you found this one too and even better that you enjoyed! And yes, so much sadness and the enduring uncertainty is so hard. 1w
Christine @sarahbarnes Feels like an embarrassment of yet-to-be-discovered riches when it comes to Everett! And sending good wishes to your daughter, hope all are able to escape further disaster over the next few days. 1w
Christine @monalyisha It's so hard to keep track of where everyone is (region or country! :)! And I love that perspective re: #AuldLangSpine ! So true. We're so far unaffected in San Diego, though inland areas have warnings re: this next round of winds that's arriving. And yes, climate justice is so needed. We are all at risk wherever we live. 😔 1w

Horse: A Novel | Geraldine Brooks

Pickpick

This book introduces us to Lexington, one of the greatest race horses of all time. Based loosely on real people throughout history comes a fictional story that captivates you into the race horse world and connects three time lines in history to one amazing horse. This book starts out strong, but then hits a lull in the middle, then finishes strong. Just like a race horse should lol

The Black Stallion (tagged) by Walter Farley was my favorite childhood book. Read all his horse books numerous times. Honorable mention is My Friend Flicka, Big Red and the Billy and Blaze series. Not a surprise than animal stories were my favorite.

Readergrrl Me too!!! I read the Black Stallion series so many times I could‘ve recited them! Marguerite Henry, Billy and Blaze, and so many more. I still have my first copy of The Black Stallion signed by my dad for Christmas of 1976. It holds a place of honor in my library. 🐎🩷 4w

TheSpineView @Readergrrl I wish I still had my books from that age. So great that you have such wonderful memories. 4w
AllDebooks Oooh, I've not heard of this author, I'll have to seek him out as I did love 4w
DogMomIrene Loved the Black Stallion series too. And the movie was so beautifully shot. Thinking about all the reboots of older movies happening now in Hollywood, and I‘m wishing someone would tackle this story again, and the sequels. 3w
TheSpineView @DogMomIrene Great idea! I would love to see a remake! ❤️🐎📽 3w
