Picked up the tagged book on Jan, 1st. It opened of its own accord on page 100: fosco (cold chocolate drink) and poffertjes (drop scones/thick pancakes made with plain & buckwheat flour), which apparently “were a traditional New Year treat in North Holland“. That was fate & obviously, I had to try them. Very nice! Will definitely make them again 👍

I read or heard an interview with Arden somewhere that this book came about when she started thinking about how this time period changed so many of our perceptions of the world and she decided to write about how it might have changed our perception of the devil. I deal with WWII a lot for work and the idea of this - the devil finding a new calling in WWI France - really spoke to me.

Andrew65 Sounds a very interesting read. 3d

4.5 ⭐ This is the story of Maurice, a young man who had to flee his home when Nazis took over. He had a dream all his life to become a lawyer. Because lawyers helped people. But life moving from place to place to stay away from the war and death took its toll on Maurices education. As a refugee in Jamaica, he wanted to continue his education, but the refugees were not even allowed out of camp without a day pass. So instead of going to school,

LibrarianRyan he went to his neighbors. Said teach me and I will learn. Eventually through his studies and through time he realized that the only way to get into college to go to law school was to graduate high school. So he pled his case to a local Jamaican school and then again into a university in Canada. Maurice did attain his law license and the rest of history. This book was lovingly written by Marissa‘s son. The illustrator told the story in graphic 4d
LibrarianRyan format, and it works quite well. This book is a bit longer because it‘s a biography. This book was fantastic and I hope others read it and learn how important in education is when you are denied one. 4d

Attentat | Amelie Nothomb

Even though not my favorite book by Nothomb, it's still a typical Amelie Nothomb book and therefore worth reading (for me). Once again she digs into the topic of beauty. Epiphane is heavily deformed and therefore called ugly. But he makes it work for him. But lives a beautiful soul in an ugly body? Or is he just as superficial as we all are? A perfidious little piece written by the master herself.

A haunting, affecting book that will stick with me. The main character is a nameless woman who is kept in an underground bunker with 39 other women. Unlike the others, she was brought here as a young child and has no memories of the world outside this one room. They live a completely restricted, controlled life. It amounts to a treatise on what it means to be human and free. A consuming novel and such a singular and unusual reading experience.

Wow that book is something. A bucket of cold water into the face, but in a bracing and energizing way. Was absolutely hypnotised by the writing and protagonist. It is not fun, but it asks some really interesting questions.

This is more litfic than genre SF, and some of the worldbuilding feels fudged. But that is not the point of the book. Also the ending leaves you dangling. Intentionally and I loved it, but I know some ppl hate that.

Mollie moonbeam and I finished this one in bed 🛌 this morning 🌅 😂one of our favourite ❤️ places to read , anyway a so so read for me the author states at the back of the book at stages she didn‘t think she‘d finish 🙃 writing this ; and I can see why . It isn‘t bad far from it , it just lakes depth - there‘s a great story in there somewhere and I appreciate how hard the writing process is. So on Remembrance Day remembering our brave & fallen
