I liked this. Most of the story takes place in the year following an EMP attack. It‘s how a rural mountain community is able to gather and ration what they have and work as hard as possible to survive impossible conditions. Many don‘t survive and there is a lot of violence. Not the most polished writing, but the story is thought-provoking and engaging. And bleak, especially near the end. It inspired some great conversations with my family.

ItsAnotherJen Such a good series! My dad recommended it to me, and it was fun to have something to talk to him about since we usually don't read the same books 1d

Listened a second time in preparation for the sequel. I enjoyed it even better! Narrator has the perfect voice and accent for it. 😁

I think this novel especially appeals to me having grown up in an isolated AK Native village. It has a familiar ring.

Bookwormjillk I can‘t wait to start the sequel 5d
Tamra @Bookwormjillk me too! I‘m so glad you posted about it. It may be a while before my hold becomes available. 😬 5d

I love this book and wanted to re-read before I read the sequel later this month. What happens to an isolated community when the world ends? #FoodAndLit #Canada

San Antonio, Texas has had an outbreak of a particularly virulent & deadly form of flu & have been cut off from the outside world by a perimeter wall built around the city. Hundreds are dying every day & have to be buried in mass graves. Det Lily Harris works collating burial statistics & notices a body that doesn't seem to have been autopsied & a bullet wound suggests that this is a murder victim hidden amongst the other dead.

OutsmartYourShelf As the police investigation intensifies, they uncover a conspiracy involving those in charge who are intent on hiding the truth from the public.

To say this was originally written over a decade before Covid, it sure got a lot of things right: masks, lockdowns, & staying so many metres apart. It could have been really good except for the fact that the MC, Lily, is a horrible person using fatphobic & homophobic language to describe people.

OutsmartYourShelf In books like this where the MC is fighting for survival, the reader has to become invested in their story, but I really couldn't care less if Lily survived the pandemic or not. 2⭐

4.75⭐
I was hooked on this and blew right through this edition of the series. Hannah, Liam, and Quinn are, by far, my favorite characters, so I loved having them together. I've become invested in these characters. Without giving anything away, there is a pivotal incident in this book that I‘ve been waiting for, and it couldn‘t have gone down better.
I would love for this to be a full-cast production but Stacey Glemboski does a decent job with it.

After watching the anime, and enjoying one after many, many years without really getting back into anime, I also wanted to read the manga. And it felt so nice being on tour with the girls again. The anime and the manga are about 1 to 1 the same, what a great adaption! The drawing style is special, and just as the anime, there are hidden depths to be found in this mostly very cute series.
