Kafka on the Shore | Haruki Murakami

Mehso-so

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around this one. The story itself was very interesting and inventive, and it kept my interest, but at the same time, I didn't love it and parts of it felt like the story was droning on and didn't need to be included. But, I'm glad I read it, as it's listed on the #apliterature book list, and I've heard a lot of people talking about it.

The Inferno | Dante

Pickpick

"Do not ask, Reader, how my blood ran cold
and my voice choked up with fear. I cannot write it:
this is a terror that cannot be told." -Dante, The Inferno

This is the epic poem of Dante's descent through the levels of Hell, with the poet Virgil as his guide. I hadn't read this since high school, many many many years ago, so this is the first book on my #ReadingClassicsIn2019 list. #coffeeandabook #englishteacher #classicliterature #apliterature

thebluestocking Such a great book. I haven‘t read it since college though... 6y

Hamlet | William Shakespeare
post image

We've been reading Hamlet in my AP Literature class, and my students didn't seem to be very interested in it until yesterday, when we got to Act III, scene 4. 🗡 #englishteacher #teachersoflitsy #apliterature #shakespeare #hamlet

CoffeeNBooks Act III, scene 4 is when Hamlet is in Queen Gertrude's room. When she tells him he's offended his father (King Claudius), he wittily replies that no, in fact, she's offended his father (King Hamlet). Polonius has been hiding behind a tapestry in Queen Gertrude's room, and when he hears Queen Gertrude telling Hamlet he's killing her (with his words), he thinks Hamlet is actually killing her. He yells out, and Hamlet ends up stabbing him. 🗡 6y
Readergrrl Oooh! I love teaching with Hamlet in my AP class. I saw Hamlet at the Globe this past summer. Very interesting production... 6y
Trashcanman The Grave digger is awesome. Knows how to flip shit well. Lol 6y

Trashcanman And Polonius got what was coming to him. 6y
brandybear22 Basically the root of all dramatic storylines... if that scene doesn't pique their intrigue, there isn't much else that would! 6y
CoffeeNBooks @Trashcanman Polonius the long-winded, meddling, busy-body brought it on himself. 👀 6y
GingerAntics Love that scene!!! Plus, recent adaptations have made this a truly creepy Freudian scene. 6y

Dracula | Bram Stoker

Pickpick

After having this on my TBR list for a very long time, I finally read it, and I'm so glad I did! I love romantic era gothic novels, and it was really interesting to read the novel that started our beliefs/myths/legends about vampires. #classics #classicliterature #apliterature #englishteacher
@bewareofwords - don't read my comment below until you're done reading the book! 😁

CoffeeNBooks I'm so glad they were able to work together to get rid of Count Dracula! I was afraid it was going to end like a Shakespeare play, with everyone dead. As Stoker started writing about the winter snows coming, I assumed he was using it as a metaphor for Mina's death. I'm glad she didn't die, but I'm saddened that poor Quincy did. 6y

JoRead Love that cover 😍 6y
Maggie_Reads Am I the only one that thinks that looks like a creepy Tom Cruise? 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️😂 6y
GripLitGrl @Maggie_Reads 😂😂😂 YES!! a creepy Tom Cruise i so see it👍 6y
bewareofwords No way! I finished the book today too! 😂 That was awesome timing. I completely agree with everything you said—that is exactly how I felt reading this last section! The weather and Mina‘s failing health were very ominous. But I was so happy that they were able to defeat Dracula together! 👏🏽 6y
MStew Cover😍 6y
CoffeeNBooks @Maggie_Reads Yes! I thought so, too! 😁 6y
CoffeeNBooks @bewareofwords I couldn't stop reading! 6y

Currently reading Dracula. It's interesting to read the work that all our myths of vampires comes from. I'm interested to keep reading to see what Count Dracula wants from Jonathan Harker. #classicliterature #classics #epistolary #apliterature #englishteacher #teachersoflitsy @bewareofwords

inthegreensandblues This is a classic that I've always meant to get to... I think if I had that cover, though, I'd have to keep it face-down! 😱 6y

rwmg @BBL4nkensh1p @inthegreensandblues Did you know Puffin books is Penguin's children's imprint? 6y
inthegreensandblues @rwmg I didn't! But actually, I'd have been much more attracted to a scary cover when I was a kid than I am now, so that makes a kind of sense to me. 😄 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I need to reread this. I remember liking it very much and scared me when I read it many moons ago. 🙂 6y
sdbruening Love the original 😁 6y
bewareofwords I‘ve felt the same way about the Dracula myths! I had forgotten so many little things, like a vampire‘s dislike of garlic and crosses. It‘s creepy how he climbs walls like a lizard, too. I‘m interested to see what else I learn about his abilities and limitations! 6y
CoffeeNBooks @bewareofwords I wasn't expecting Dracula to be able to scale walls! 6y

cj82487 Such a great book to digest. I had it as a topic for discussion in a few classes. So many ways to look at it and evaluate. I almost picked it for my senior thesis but chose Fahrenheit 451 instead 7y
CoffeeNBooks @cj82487 It seems like every time I read it, I find something that I hadn't seen before. My copy of it has so many things I've written in it. Fahrenheit 451 is another good one! I just read it last weekend, can't believe I hadn't read it before. 7y
cj82487 @CoffeeNBooks I agree. Same with Fahrenheit. The first time I read it, I liked it. 2nd time, I realized how haunting the atory was. Then i had to write a few papers on it & you would think that would make me never want to read it again but nope. Lol. 7y

A timeless cautionary tale. As in most dystopian works, freedoms are taken away under the guise of keeping people safe and providing them with a happier life.

Yet, "Better never means better for everyone. It always means worse, for some." -The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood

Swe_Eva Another classic I‘ve yet to read... 7y
CoffeeNBooks @Swe_Eva It's really good, and it's a very quick read! I started it yesterday and finished it today. 7y
Swe_Eva @CoffeeNBooks Not sure why I‘ve not gotten to it. I recently finally got Slaughterhouse Five read and that one took me a mere 4 hours. I should just go through my bookshelf and find all the thin ones and read those first! 😂 7y
CoffeeNBooks @Swe_Eva Slaughterhouse-Five is great, one of my favorites! I really like Kurt Vonnegut's quirky writing style. 😃 7y
Swe_Eva @CoffeeNBooks It was my first Vonnegut and it was very different from what I had expected. Not sure what I HAD expected, but not that. He‘s a lot funnier and odder than I thought. 👍🏻 7y

🌧 It's a rainy, dreary day... a perfect excuse to stay inside and read all day! #classics #classicliterature #bronte #apliterature #englishteacher #teachersoflitsy

MelissaSue81 I almost picked this up at the booksale yesterday. I‘ve never read it. 7y
JoRead I know lots of people that prefer this one over any of Austen's books but it was just meh for me. The story was ok but the pace was sooooo slow and the narrative so boring. Let us know what you think 😊 7y
Christine11 This is one of my favourite ever books! Enjoy! 😊 7y
PedestalNix I first read this about fifteen years ago, and enjoyed it quite a bit. Been meaning to give it a re-read. Enjoy it! 7y
