This book tells the story of how white Americans drove the buffalo to the brink of extinction then a few individuals helped save enough animals to allow the species to survive. It‘s well done with interviews from many sources, including Native voices. It has many illustrations, which I appreciated. Apparently there‘s an associated documentary if you want to check that out.

Soubhiville I saw this author speak at Texas Book Fest a couple years ago and I was touched. He got very emotional about his topic. I haven‘t read this yet but definitely would like to at some point. 1mo
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville That emotion and passion comes through in the book, so I‘m not surprised. I think that makes for the very best kinds of narratives. It adds a layer beyond just facts. And the people quoted in the book have a lot of passion, too, which I love. 1mo

15/100 I guess I've watched too many westerns, because I found this kind of dry. The Dalton Gang was one of the last big outlaw gangs before the beginning of the 20th century, and their exploits are well know and often overly fictionalized. I don't know why, but I found the lawmen more interesting than the outlaws. 3 ⭐⭐⭐

Butterfinger I know I can and will Google, but I am thinking Matt McConaughey played in a movie about them with Dwight Yoakum. 2mo
Butterfinger Nope. Newtons. 2mo
RamsFan1963 @Butterfinger I had to look it up on IMDb, but there was a 1979 tv movie call The Last Ride of The Dalton Gang, which covers pretty much the last half of this book. 2mo

You can love someone while also being so wrong about them, failing to see them in their fullest self because your own misshapen expectations dampen their light. Susan was forever doubting her husband, forever wishing he‘d be more talkative and more genteel. In doing so, she appeared the biggest fool for not seeing all that she had. Oliver repaid the unintentional slight by watching her survive but never changing course enough to let her thrive.

Finally got my date for my second mastectomy booked. When I was filling out my paperwork at the start of my cancer treatments in September 2021, I filled out some paperwork in regard to doing genetic testing. I did the testing after finishing my chemo treatments for my breast cancer and subsequently found out that I did have a genetic mutation that made me more susceptible to developing breast cancer.

melissajayne So last May my mom & I had discussion with someone about my genetic results with a nurse from the genetics department from the cancer clinic and she mentioned that I was still at an elevated risk for developing breast cancer in my right breast. So the decision was made that I would be doing a second mastectomy booked. 2mo
melissajayne I wished I had known earlier about the genetic anomalies prior to my first mastectomy, but that wasn‘t the case. This mastectomy will be largely preventative so it won‘t be as invasive, but will still require a bunch of time of recovery. I am doing it at this time of year so I can go swimming in the summer months & hv lots of time to recover properly. 2mo
Butterfinger I will be thinking of you. Keep us updated. 2mo

Wanting to increase his income enough that his cattle ranch could continue to survive, a Montana man contracted with a wind company to establish a small wind farm on his property. This book shows how moneyed interests worked to put every blockade in his path. It is outstanding narrative nonfiction and contains warning bells for the way the US appears to be going.

Pedrocamacho Sounds interesting 😊 there have been a number of stories in recent years talking folks clashing in small Montana towns over some fairly rudimentary stuff 2mo
thecheckoutstack Oh yeah! I live on the other side of the crazies from Big Timber where an investment real estate company has purchased what used to be the Marlboro Ranch and is in major conflict with the surrounding ranches and towns over water rights so they can keep their golf courses green. It‘s a wild landscape out here. 2mo
Hooked_on_books @Pedrocamacho @thecheckoutstack My in-laws live in Montana and have a billionaire complete with helicopter down the road from them. I think Montana wants to feel like it‘s still the Wild West and this is the kind of thing you end up with as a result. 2mo
Pedrocamacho Yeah, @Hooked_on_books, wasn‘t Blazing Saddles about a rich guy trying to take over a town for his devices? I‘m not sure that‘s what folks are nostalgic for when they imagine the ‘Wild West‘ 🤣 (edited) 2mo
