Murder: The Biography | Kate Morgan
post image
Pickpick

A look at the development of the English judicial system on the topic of murder, & the cases that contributed to changing aspects of the law. From well-known cases to more obscure crimes, each one helped either set a precedent or provided the need for updating current case law.

Given the subject, I wondered if it was going to be quite dry to read, but I needn't have worried. It was a really interesting read from start to finish. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf As the book moves through the centuries from the Tudor legal bigwig, Sir Edward Coke, to the present-day, the author focuses on a particular aspect of the law from domestic murder to holding companies responsible for decisions which lead to the death of employees or customers. A comprehensive look at the evolution of English law. 4.5🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, HarperCollins UK/Mudlark, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

Repost for @julieclair
Only 5% of my 2024 reading was nonfiction. I need to up my game. I have decided to challenge myself to read at least one nonfiction book per month (preferably one I already own). Anyone want to join me?

We can post using the hashtag #MonthlyNonfiction2025.

All are welcome!

There is also a StoryGraph challenge for those who like to use those: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/05fd860d-5e9b-45d6-bdf4-28410ac...

All are welcome!

TEArificbooks I have this goal every year 3mo
julieclair @TEArificbooks Do you usually do well with it? I‘m worried I‘m going to get distracted by aaalllll the fiction. 3mo
TEArificbooks Yes I‘ve been able to do it for a few years now. It is one book a month minimum. If you go to my page you will see the ones I read this year. There are lots of narrative nonfiction out there, makes it seem like you are reading fiction not a textbook. 3mo

julieclair @TEArificbooks Thanks for the encouragement! I loved seeing the photo of your completed stack. 👍🩵 3mo
TheBookgeekFrau I'll be dipping in and out of this 3mo
willaful This reminds me of a challenge I used to love, which picked a different dewey category every month to read from. 3mo
Gissy I‘m in the same boat, every year trying to read more nonfiction. I established a goal of at least 5 nonfiction this year. But I will follow your progress and see if I can do it next year😳☺️I don‘t know if I just want to escape reality wanting to read mostly fiction😳🤣🤣🤣🤣 3mo
julieclair @TheBookgeekFrau Great! It‘s very casual. Join in whenever it suits your schedule. 😉 3mo
julieclair @willaful What a fun idea! I may “unofficially” try to do that. Or at least keep track of which Dewey categories I‘m reading from. Would you like to be on the tag list? 3mo
julieclair @Gissy We can support each other as we read! 😃 3mo
rockpools Please could I join your tag list? My NF reading has dropped right off the last couple of years. Getting back to one a month would be great! 3mo
willaful @julieclair yes, please tag me. 3mo
Lauredhel I don't know if I'll make all 12, but go ahead and tag me! 3mo
Gissy @julieclair Yes🙋🏽‍♀️ 3mo
julieclair @rockpools So glad to have you with us! 😃 3mo
julieclair @willaful Yay! Glad you‘re joining us. 🙂 3mo
julieclair @Lauredhel Glad you‘re with us! And no pressure about completing every month. This is a very low-key challenge. 😉 3mo
Lauredhel @julieclair Turns out I've already read a beekeeping book, so that's January done! 3mo
julieclair @Lauredhel Woo hoo! ☑️👍😀 3mo
TheAromaofBooks Add me to this challenge, please!! And actually, you posting the Dewey categories got me thinking - 11 categories, what if I read a category a month and December is free? Believe it or not, I actually have my jillion NF books sorted by Dewey so it should be easy to do 😂 3mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Good idea. @willaful also mentioned that. I think I‘m going to add the Dewey categories as bonus prompts in the SG challenge, so people can track the categories as an optional activity. 3mo
Sarahreadstoomuch Ooh I should up my NF game too…. I‘d like to give this a shot and see how I do! 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick In 2025, I'd like to read 96 books, with 6 of those being non-fiction, and my monthly country overviews for #foodandlit will not count. 😁 If this year is kind to me and I can carve out more reading time, I may increase both numbers, but I may partially join you. 3mo
julieclair @Sarahreadstoomuch So glad you‘re joining us! We can encourage each other! 😃 3mo
julieclair @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Yay! Glad to have you with us! This is a very low key challenge, so feel free to jump in and out as your schedule allows. 😉 3mo
Rissreadswithcats I‘d love to join in and read at least 12 nonfiction books this year. Not sure if I‘ll stick to the Dewey categories though but I will definitely check it out. 3mo
julieclair @Rissreadswithcats Hooray! So glad you‘re joining us. This challenge is very low key, so structure it in whatever way works best for you! 😃 3mo
mhillis Just realized this was a thing! I‘d like to join! 2mo

4⭐️ I quite liked this book. Very introspective and informative. There were a number of things I liked about the book; would like to purchase a paperback copy when it comes out. And he mentions what he intended to say in regards to the Nikki Haley comment that lead to his firing #2024 #memoir #religion #nonfiction #politics

Oh my goodness, @dabbe !!!! My #HauntedHollowSwap contained so many fabulous gifts, I can barely fit them all into the photo collage! But I had to include the magnetic vampire S&P shakers in both poses... apart and kissing. What a hoot!

How could you possibly have known I have been wanting a two tier tray to display seasonal decor? It looks so cute all set up! And the diamond painting... you really are a good stalker. 🧡 The two books are ⬇️

julieclair perfect. And the gorgeous book cover. 🧡 Plus the food... Pumpkin spice coffee, black & white beans for cozy soup, very yummy caramels! Add in the stickers, post cards, note book and your pretty note, and you have truly spoiled me. Thank you so very much! 🎃👻🧡🧡🧡👻🎃 6mo

I wasn‘t sure at first on this book, but the more I read, I started to see a full vision of what could be. I think a lot about the type of home we are creating for my kids-the environment, stretching, encouragement, etc. This book gave some excellent guidelines and ideas to help make our home a place where our kids can thrive!
