Posting my fifth and final #trappedinaspookyhouse review just in time for #snowedin, haha.

This was fun and I enjoyed it, but somehow it felt a little flimsy to me. The gimmicks and wordplay were great and the worldbuilding was very creative, but the plot and particularly the love story needed a little more polishing. Maybe the later books in the series do better with this? Let me know. Anyway I‘m glad I read it; it‘s been on my TBR for years.

#trappedinaspookyhouse

Been putting off my review of this one because I don‘t quite know what to say. It was good; I enjoyed it. Thought-provoking and left me wondering if I‘d missed some of the symbolism (no, actually - I‘m *sure* I missed some). I liked the idea of the strange world “Piranesi” inhabits and the book does a good job of contrasting the motives of the different characters who come to see him there.

Bookwomble I don't want to *spoiler* so haven't tagged it, but do you know the book that Piranasi references? 1mo
CSeydel @Bookwomble I know the one that‘s in the epigraph, if that‘s the one you mean. There are a lot of references among the statues and so on, of course (edited) 1mo
Bookwomble Yes, that's the one I was thinking of. I'd forgotten it was in the epigraph, so I'll hang up my deerstalker hat and put away my meerschaum pipe! 😄 1mo

Lesliereadsalot I loved this one! But you can skip her new little 60 page fantasy story. 1mo
CSeydel @Lesliereadsalot oh, was it not good? 1mo
CSeydel @Bookwomble hahaha, well, even though it was in the epigraph, there were definitely some Easter eggs in the story that a reader might miss if she hadn‘t read that other book in, oh, 30 years or so. In fact, I pulled it out to re-read when I finished Piranesi! 1mo
Lesliereadsalot Mostly illustrations and a beautiful cover. You can read it standing up in the bookstore. 1mo

Sheriff Titus has his hands full with an anticipated march in support of a statue honoring a Confederate hero and likely counter protesters organized by a black preacher, when a bloodthirsty serial killer‘s evil deeds are discovered following a school shooting of everyone‘s favorite teacher. No simple solution to find the killer, and things get pretty twisted and bloody very quickly. And yet there are the most endearing moments between Titus & ⬇️

Merritt inherits a magical house that makes his life miserable. Thanks to a magical housekeeper, Hulda, the house is tamed. Merritt, Hulda, the house, and staff all start getting along charmingly until an evil magician desires to upend everything. Set in the mid-1800s, it often feels anachronistic but then magic isn‘t real either. With a touch of romance, this is a charming story and I‘ll plan to continue with the series.

This is supposed to be set in a British uni and yet nothing about it feels British. There are a few obvious things like eggplant rather than aubergine, cheerleaders being a common thing, but in general it doesn't feel British.

Also, I've never heard students talk the way they do. It's jarring.

There wasn't much to this book. The romance was fairly anaemic and the world wasn't really explored

The book starts with a lot of info dumping. It takes about 200 pages before anything happens. I kept going because I've heard how amazing it was.

For me, it did not improve. There was too much narration, hardly any dialogue, and I was bored.

PuddleJumper @Catsandbooks I didn't like Six of Crows either so might be the writing style. Enjoyed the TV show though 2mo
