Final check in for #SummersEndReadathon

I got so close to my goal at 2,809 of 3,000 pages but didn't make that final push. It's okay though I read some great stuff and finished 10 books, which is one more than I usually read in a month.

Thank you @thespineview for hosting!

Magic Island: The Fictions of L.M. Montgomery | Elizabeth Hillman Waterston

In the end, the only reason I really enjoyed this one was because of the absolutely fantastic discussions with @BarbaraJean !! The book itself was... frustrating. I really wanted more about LMM's craft and the way her skills developed (considering she was almost completely self-taught) but instead Waterston chose to dwell a LOT on (very) tenuous connections between LMM's writing and her real life, some of which made sense and others of which ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) were simply nonsensical. There was a lot of potential here, and this book did make me want to reread LMM's novels in their published order (especially the Anne books, which I always read chronologically) to see if I could notice the development of her writing and tone.

Learning more about LMM's life has in general made me respect her even more for her ability to craft such delightful, lighthearted, warm, cozy, welcoming stories ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) even when her own personal life was full of difficulties and complications. Waterston preferred to draw out all the small bits of drama and bitterness from LMM's books and emphasize them disproportionately, which I think does LMM's writing a great disservice.

So I didn't really enjoy this book, but I did LOVE our discussions, so in the end I did feel like I benefited by take more of a deep-delve into LMM's writing, even we spent most ⬇

Finally got around to reading the next book in the Temeraire series. When I'm reading these books, I'm totally into them. When I'm not reading them, I don't care about them haha Novik uses a rather formal language for these to make them sound more old-fashioned. It mostly works, but also makes them come through as rather impersonal at times. I love the characters, the concept, and the story, but somehow these books just don't hook me in. ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) However, I'll definitely be continuing to read these. I'm enjoying purchasing the reissued (and absolutely gorgeous) paperbacks one at a time as I get to them.

TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - I really do like them, but I haven't fallen in love with them. They're a bit serious for my taste, but still engaging. 1y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks Good to know, thanks 😁 1y

Killers of a Certain Age | Deanna Raybourn

There were things about this book that irked me (not just the high body count), but in the end I enjoyed the Deanna Raybourn of it. Humor, insight, and little bit of raunchiness. It also gets at least half a star for one character‘s monologue on women‘s guilt, which reminded me a little of America Ferrara‘s speech from the Barbie movie.

Another book completed for #summersendreadathon and extended #rushathon

#SummersEndReadathon Book 5 of 20

This was slow to start but picked up after 50 pages or so. Told from two perspectives: one a family barely making it day to day and the other a family with wealth and education in Nigeria. The title suggests hope to me but there is very little to be found in these pages. 3.5 🌟

TheSpineView Great job! 1y
