The Ersatz Elevator | Lemony Snicket

The sixth in A Series of Unfortunate Events was my favorite of the series and of June. I love quirky villains. The ones so damn weird, they really should be incompetent but somehow prove to get in the way of our protagonists anyway. Tim Curry's performance of Esme Squalor only enhanced her ridiculous trend following. "Children, here are some things you should know. Dark is in. Light is out. Stairs are in. Elevators are out. ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Pinstripe suits are in. Those horrible clothes you are wearing are out." The word "in" perfectly becomes two syllables, so it's more like 'i-in". *chef's kiss* Esme, you're a terrible human, and your husband really needs to nut up, but by golly, you're entertaining. Just don't make me drink the celery soda.

At least one of my 2024 goals has been achieved. ✅️
I set out to read all 13 books of A Series of Unfortunate Events. I moved to audio on book 5 and was rewarded with Tim Curry narration beginning with book 6, The Ersatz Elevator. It proved to be my favorite, with Curry's performance of Esme Squalor and her obsession with trends that are in and things that are out. Overall, the series was a pick, but I didn't love it.⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Maybe my age is showing, but there can't be that many incompetent adults out there, right?! I also found the ending odd.

@AmandaBlaze The year didn't allow me to be a proper host and follow up regularly. Thank you for joining me early on!

Librarybelle I adored Tim Curry‘s narration of the series! 3mo
TieDyeDude I read these 8-or-so years ago, mixing audio and physical. I agree the narration was excellent. I was conflicted on the ending, and the long lists and tangents got a little tiresome towards the end, but I thought it was well done and a refreshingly unique and darker kids series. 3mo
PaperbackPirate @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TieDyeDude I wasn‘t a fan of how the series ended, but it was a mostly fun ride. 😜 3mo

Finally finished my reread of this series! I've been listening to one each month over the past year.
This conclusion has always been bittersweet. So many questions are left unanswered, yet it's lovely seeing the growth of these siblings and their determination to face an unfair world.

The Netflix adaptation of this series only (NOT the Jim Carrey movie 🤮) I thought it did a great job with the story, characters, and tone of the books, while also adding new layers to the mysteries hinted at throughout the series.
I just finished rereading the books and now I want to watch the series again

BookmarkTavern I stopped reading the books after nine,
but I actually really enjoyed the Netflix series! Thanks for answering!

The Baudelaire siblings find themselves at the last safe place and must observe the people gathering to decide if they are villains or volunteers. But they come to realize that things are not always so black and white.
This has always been my favorite installment of the series. The Hotel Denouement is such a fun setting, with a ridiculous organization system, and many previous characters make reappearances to help or hinder the children's task.

I have the entire 13 book collection of A Series of Unfortunate Events and should really read it or get rid of it. If I do a book a month (with 1 & 2 in January for momentum), would anyone else be interested in a buddy read for 2024? I am not a question-y person, so it would just be casual. Just an occasional check-in, comraderie thing.

AmandaBlaze I was just thinking of rereading those. Sounds like fun. 1y
peanutnine I'm just finishing up my reread of the series, doing one book a month, and had a blast with them! Hope you enjoy! ☺️ 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @AmandaBlaze You're welcome to join me! I'll give it a fun hashtag #AnUnfortunateReadalong. I'm aiming to read book 1 by January 15 and book 2 by January 31. One book a month from there. Maybe others will join in. I've never read these, nor have I watched the series, so I'm excited to see how it goes. Maybe my niece will get in on this after I finish them. 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @katy4peas I think you and I talked about this a couple of years ago. I'm gonna do it! If all is well and you'd like to join in, I'm happy to have you. 1y
