I started this one on audio, switched to print because I was struggling to get into it, and then finished it on audio. I think maybe in the end the struggle was my own, because eventually I found myself not wanting to turn it off. I love Perveen. This isn‘t a true dual timeline book in my opinion, but I love how the author took us back to Perveen in 1916/1917. What happens to her (🤬) during that time plays a huge part in the person/solicitor ⬇️

Bookzombie she becomes. I will definitely be continuing with this series. #setinacountrywhereUNpeacekeepersare This is my final book for #Booked2021 ! 3y
EvieBee I really enjoyed this one too! It took a minute for me to get into it but really loved it. What these women go through made my blood boil! 3y

The Map of Salt and Stars: A Novel | Jennifer Zeynab Joukhadar

I went into this book with with high expectations but ended up only caring about one of the storylines, the modern day journey of young Nour who left America, where she was born, for Syria, where her family is from, only to be forced to flee violence and travel as refugee. The story of Rawiya, hundreds of years earlier, did not have the same resonance with me, despite the lovely writing.

BiblioLitten I bailed on this. It seemed very ambitious yet half-hearted as the same time. 3y
Jas16 @BiblioLitten I can absolutely see why you felt that way. 3y

I really enjoyed this book, which gave excellent insights into the impact of the #Palestinian diaspora. Each chapter is written from the perspective of a woman in a resilient multi-generational family from the mid-60s to 2016, and showing how repeated wars, persecution, love, and hope for a better life lead them to Kuwait, Lebanon, Jordan, France, and the U.S. without losing family and ethnic ties.

Next up for #booked2021. It has been on my list to read forever and by happy coincidence whilst looking for a book to fill the #setinacountrywhereunpeacekeepersare prompt it was on sale. I want to celebrate India as the biggest contributor of troops since the the UN peacekeeping inception and the first country to deploy an all female contingent to a UN peacekeeping mission in 2007 (which I think the female sleuth in this book would be proud of)

Cinfhen Woohoo 🎉 🙌🏻💕 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Interesting info! And I hope you enjoy the book. I thought it was lovely! 3y

I didn‘t think it was possible to love this sequel even more than the first, but I did! The characters are so starkly real, I physically ache for them. Kudos to Umrigar for creating a fascinating story of unlikely friendships, of resilience, forgiveness and hope. Highly recommended in audio, with Kleenex on the side. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

LikelyLibrarian My favorites appear in the top row. It‘s been said before, but Piranesi is especially beautiful and unlike anything I‘ve ever read before.
The second row are good reads, 3+ stars all. Murmur of Bees is beautifully written, and Library of Legends gets a special shout-out for the gorgeous cover.

The best sort of narrative nonfiction. The story of five people, all of whom are firmly rooted in Karachi life and community- an ambulance-driver, a crime reporter, an educator-activist, a mapmaker-surveyor & a housewife. Shackle interviewed/chatted with the five over a period of five years, resulting in deep storytelling of their lives, concerns, hopes and families, amidst the disorder, violence & corruption of the city. ⬇️

rockpools You feel the whole book is coming from a place of respect and admiration for the place and its people.

As an aside, is it weird to fall in love with a city you have no intention of ever going near? (Yes, Rachel, it is. Maybe stop talking about now...) Years ago, I fell for Karachi reading Kamila Shamsie‘s Kartography. Despite the horrors (there are a lot of horrors in this book), Karachi Vice hasn‘t managed to shake that from me.

rockpools Oh, and because I haven‘t used enough hashtags, this is my 2nd book for #NutsInMay. @Andrew65 4y

Cinfhen This really sounds GREAT!! #stacked 4y
BarbaraBB This really sounds good. Also because I share your fascination for Karachi. I have been there once but haven‘t read Kartography. I must read that since I‘ve loved other books by Shamsie. 4y
rockpools @BarbaraBB I‘m not sure if it was her first novel, certainly a very early one, so different to her more well-known ones. Teenagers in 1980s Karachi, a very different time, I think. And wow, how was it? Were you there long? 4y
BarbaraBB I was in Pakistan in 2000. A few days in Karachi. It was intense. So much violence and poverty on one side and so much beauty and extremely nice people on the other. It made a big impression and I‘ve meant to return ever since. 4y
rockpools @BarbaraBB ❤️ That description is really how the city comes across in Karachi Vice. But yes, intense sounds like the word. 4y

‘It‘s more of a novella than a novel she said , it leaves space for your thoughts to echo‘
Space for your thoughts to echo.. I thought of what and where is home .. home as a person or a country or a familiar sight. Home as a love story these characters could not let go of.
What we become attached to and why.
Such a profoundly moving book , many poignant moments .. that will echo in my thoughts. Very beautiful & sad. All the stars

An inspiring story of a girl who stood up for what she believed in. The language is simple and direct.
Read this for #readingasia2021 #pakistan as well as #booked2021 #SETINACOUNTRYWHEREUNPEACEKEEPERSARE
