That's so fucked up. Hope he's OK.
“Go for broke. Always try and do too much. Dispense with safety nets. Take a deep breath before you begin talking. Aim for the stars. Keep grinning. Be bloody-minded. Argue with the world. And never forget that writing is as close as we get to keeping a hold on the thousand and one things--childhood, certainties, cities, doubts, dreams, instants, phrases, parents, loves--that go on slipping , like sand, through our fingers.”
#QuotsySept18 Day 30: #Translation is bearing language across; and as such, “we are translated men.” Rushdie.
A feminist protest in support of Rushdie.
Good analysis of what happened to lead to Rushdie being under a fatwa. Ruthven makes the point that although the novel drew controversy in other countries, it mainly caused hostility within the Islamic community in the UK who saw Rushdie as a traitor and rejected western culture as abhorrent. It does show how political attitudes have changed but that the points made are still relevant.
Falling into some odd books at the moment. Know I should be tackling #mtbr 🏔️ but it looks like I'm about to start another.
Listening to #Rushdie for #Reading1001 Goodreads group. He writing is delicious.
