Wow. My first Wagamese, bought last summer on my trip to Canada - definitely not my last. At first I thought these snippets would be hard to read, as they come from social media posts and excerpts from both published and unfinished works, but the beauty, truth, and wisdom here is astounding. The book itself is gorgeous, shades of blue throughout the pages and pops of orange in the endpapers. The introduction warns to go slowly and savor this. Do.

Love how Daunts Books are publishing forgotten classics and giving new life to them. These stories are full of quiet female rage, written in a time when this was even less acceptable than it is now. Penelope Mortimer writes so brilliantly about the ennui and dissatisfaction of women of her era, feelings of being trapped, having no voice, being both under and overwhelmed by opportunities, marriage and motherhood. If you‘ve only read Agatha Christie‘s novel-length murder mysteries, you‘re missing out. She wrote tons of atmospheric, even downright creepy short stories. This collection has some good ones. I highly recommend exploring Christie‘s short stories to gain a deeper appreciation of her talent. #52bookclub2023 #publishedposthumously

As suspected, I finished last night!

Overall this is a very funny and light-hearted book, although at some points Alan doesn't come across as very nice (this is mainly directed at film editors/critics/journalists, however - not his fellow actors).

It only really gets sad towards the end, where the entries tail off/are shorter, and Rima (his wife) takes over.

The second short, beautiful and heartbreaking book about human connection I‘ve read this week, and to also make me 😭!
(The other was The Traveling Cat Chronicles)
This simple story of love, loneliness and companionship in later years is so touching, so real.....I just loved Louis and Addie so much, and the interference from Addie‘s son was maddening! This book will really stay with me.
