TheKidUpstairs @maich I've also read the Earthseed Duology. The two books are Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents. Fantastic dystopian fiction touching on race relations, environmental issues, fanaticism. I would highly recommend them! 4y
maich @TheKidUpstairs Thank you. I added them on my tbr 4y

On #NationalFreedomDay, I urge us to look toward the work yet to be done as we strive for true equity, and to remember that those of us whose roots are in the North are not exempt from recognizing that slavery is part of our history, too. #FreedomDay #LovePrevails #ShowSomeLove

TheKidUpstairs Very true. I feel that up here North of the border, too. Canadians tend to get a bit smug talking about slavery and racism in the United States, but we are far from immune. It's a part of our society's history and its present, and we must confront that reality if we're to move forward. 4y
JamieArc Have you read the tagged book? It was fascinating, and good local history to know. 4y
Eggs Well done 👍🏼 4y

CrowCAH #MittenLitten here ✋🏻 Hopefully, the book shoes the city in some positive light. 4y
Andrea313 @CrowCAH Hello, fellow #MittenLitten! I would say that this book adds complexity and nuance to how we understand the history of Detroit, and the ways in which all Americans are tied to the legacy of slavery- even in Northern cities which have long been aligned with an abolitionist ethic, and even in Detroit, as we take pride in our city's part in the Underground Railroad. I would love to hear your thoughts, should you read it! 4y
Andrea313 @JamieArc I haven't read it! Thanks for the recommendation; adding to my TBR! 4y

Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus and sparked a boycott that changed America. Harriet Tubman helped more than three hundred slaves escape the South on the Underground Railroad. Shirley Chisholm became the first black woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

JoScho The lives these women led are part of an incredible story about courage in the face of oppression; about the challenges and triumphs of the battle for civil rights; and about speaking out for what you believe in--even when it feels like no one is listening. Andrea Davis Pinkney's moving text and Stephen Alcorn's glorious portraits celebrate the lives of ten bold women who lit the path to freedom for generations. 4y
JoScho Includes biographies of Sojournor Truth, Biddy Mason, Harriet Tubman, Ida B.Wells-Barnett, Mary McLeod Bethune, Ella Josephine Baker, Dorothy Irene Height, Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Shirley Chisholm. 4y

National Freedom Day commemorates the date – February 1, 1865 – when President Lincoln signed a joint resolution that proposed the 13th amendment to the United States Constitution. The amendment was made to outlaw slavery and was ratified on December 18, 1865.

Pickpick

#ShowSomeLove Day 1: #FreedomDay and #LovePrevails Day 1: #NationalFreedomDay.
“Oh, Belle. Nothing in this world is free, not even freedom.” Freedom Soup apparently is something that slaves were asked to prepare but were never allowed to eat themselves, as the image above says. I liked how Belle‘s emotions were depicted here, but with just a single line that conveys outrage, shame, embarrassment. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-mHi

TheKidUpstairs This just sent me into an internet rabbit hole learning about Soup Joumou and its connecting to Haitian Independence celebrations! 4y
