Young Jack Sparrow does his own sort of dance trying to get out of scraps. But with true Jack flare he gets out of them.

Cinfhen ❣️❣️❣️ 6y
LibrarianRyan I love this series. 6y
RohitSawant Fun! 6y
CrowCAH @LibrarianRyan I do too! 🏴‍☠️ Even the Legends of the Brethren Court are a good read! 6y

Winter Holiday | Arthur Ransome
post image

The Lake‘s frozen over, everyone‘s in quarantine with the mumps - what better time to break out the dancing stick-men and learn semaphore?

My second-favourite (these things are important!) Swallows and Amazons book, looking like it might have been read more than once. I loved this series! Sadly my morse code and semaphore skills are irretrievably rusty...

Theaelizabet This may be the best review ever! At the very least, the most interesting! (edited) 6y

Ice Storm | Rick Moody

#MayMovieMagic

(Day 30 - #IceDance)

*One of my favorite books, is “The Ice Storm,” so naturally, that title immediately occurred to me for today‘s prompt. Above is the author, Rick Moody & ambient themes from the book: Watergate (Barbara Jordan) & the Sexual Revolution (Gloria Steinem). Below is a montage of participants in the film: Ang Lee, Joan Allen, Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Christina Ricci, Tobey Maguire, Katie Holmes, Elijah Wood.

Cinfhen What a good cast!!!!! I Don‘t remember the film 🤷‍♀️ 6y
RohitSawant Need to watch this! Echoing Cindy, fantastic cast! 6y
gradcat @Cinfhen & @rohit-sawant It is a REALLY good movie, but it‘s not exactly action-packed. It came out in 1997, and it probably lost money...but you guys are right—great cast + great director = great movie! 6y

Cinfhen Ahhhh, 1997 ... had a 2 yr old & a 4yr old... have you heard of Barney?? 🎵Barney is a dinosaur from our imagination, And when he's tall
He's what we call a dinosaur sensation🎶 that‘s what I remember from 1997
6y
gradcat @Cinfhen Hmmm...I seem to remember the color purple, and I‘m NOT referring to the novel...😂♥️ 6y
Cinfhen Hahahaha!!! Yup!! That would be the one💜 6y

The Long Winter | Laura Ingalls Wilder
post image

The Ingalls family start their #IceDance early as a long and hard winter arrives in October with a blizzard. This Puffin edition is the copy I remember reading when I was young; however, we seem to have lost it along the way (or it was, um, "borrowed" by a friend or cousin) ?

#MayMovieMagic @rohit-sawant @Cinfhen

Tamra Funny how that happens. 😏 6y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Wow!! That‘s a blast from the past!! I‘m pretty sure I read this as a kid! It was immediately familiar! 6y
teainthelibrary One of my favorite series when I was younger 💜 I really should give them a reread! 6y

LeahBergen Whenever I see this cover, I always think of those haysticks they had to twist to burn for fuel. 😮 6y
RohitSawant Ugh, that sucks when a book goes missing like that 🙁 Hadn't heard of this one. It sounds like a delightful series! 6y
gradcat I love Puffins! And those editions as well! ♥️ So sorry yours is “misplaced!” 6y
batsy @Tamra Right? 😆 6y
batsy @JanuarieTimewalker13 @teainthelibrary Yes, I was so obsessed with these books as a child! Particularly the relish with which she describes the meals they had, whether simple ones, or in good times, rather elaborate 😁❤️ 6y
batsy @LeahBergen I know! But it was only after I lived in Winnipeg that I could truly understand a long, effing hard winter 😂 6y
batsy @rohit-sawant I loved the books so much growing up so I'll always have that nostalgia about it (and they are wonderful for the stories and descriptions!) but sadly it comes with its issues of racism & colonialism. That's always going to get in the way, reading as an adult 😕 6y
batsy @gradcat Thanks ❤️ When I was a kid it was all about growing up and having my own money to buy all the nice, brand-new books I want, but as an adult it's all about hunting for used copies of the editions I read as a child 😆 6y
gradcat Ain‘t it the truth! 😂 6y
teainthelibrary @batsy did you ever read the Redwall series?! The food descriptions in those books were mouth watering 😂 6y
batsy @teainthelibrary No, I haven't! The food descriptions in Enid Blyton books were also a big draw for me 😂 6y
Centique I‘m not sure if I ever read this one. Must rectify that. I remember loving the first one - the food as you say. There‘s something so tactile about these kids books, I feel like I wore the clothes, held the doll, ate the food and so on! 6y
batsy @Centique Yes, beautifully put! It also says something about how we read as kids... Total immersion in another world and the ability to be transported. 6y
Centique @batsy that‘s a very good point! Such an ability to be transported 😍 6y
RohitSawant @batsy I get what you mean about those issues standing out. I often struggle with that reading Lovecraft. I'm in awe of his brilliance and his stories have been a major influence. But it's hard to overlook the more problematic aspects of his work. Victor LaValle's dedication to him in The Ballad of Black Tom sums it best "with my conflicted feelings." 6y
RohitSawant I saw this great panel discussion on Lovecraft not long ago about appreciating his work while also addressing the issues. It was really interesting. I'll share the link later.
On a more cheery note, I've been keeping a list of books I wish I'd read as a kid (I only read comics, mainly Batman, then), and will be adding this to it. Hoping to cross them off soon starting with Nancy Drew! And sorry for rambling 😄
6y
batsy @rohit-sawant Not at all! You make some great points & I agree. It's about trying to navigate the territory of appreciating some aspects of the work while not erasing/justifying the reprehensible views behind them. I think as readers, as people, we should be more aware & always conflicted. Too many people want easy entertainment & want to avoid feeling bad. But the world is bad! So it's OK to be conflicted. (Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now 😂) 6y

Yes, I still have a physical copy of this book. It was traumatic - Ugly cry, Princess Di - traumatic. #IceDance

@Rohit-sawant @Cinfhen

Cinfhen I totally remember this pairs team!!!! 6y
marleed @Cinfhen It‘s intriguing the times when a celebrity death makes a personal impact on me. This one had me crying real tears. It seems the world wrapped Katja in their hearts. 6y
JacqMac I still own that book, too. Heartbreaking! 6y

marleed @JacqMac I‘ve never been able to donate it. It‘s not even about the book - it‘s more the real life story and the time. I was a big fan of skaters at the time. 6y
JacqMac @marleed I feel the same way. 6y
MicheleinPhilly 😭😭😭😭OMG! I think I cried for a week when this happened. And I totally read that book many many moons ago. 6y
marleed @MicheleinPhilly Even thinking about it is still sad. I just read Tembe Locke From Scratch. She‘s a model for moving through grief. So was Ekaterina. 6y
gradcat Like @Cinfhen I, too, remember this pair. However, I feel kind of stupid—I didn‘t know about his death and her bereavement. How could I have missed that, I wonder? 🤔 6y
marleed @gradcat You were saved the ugly cry then. Here was her tribute skate when she returned to the ice alone. https://youtu.be/_X9wP8-D63o 6y
GreatBookStudy My husband bought me this for my bday when it first came out! I loved it, and I probably cried, too. I loved Gordeeva and Grinkov. Time for a reread. 6y
gradcat Thank you for the link...I think I vaguely remember hearing this when she skated by herself...your link woke up something in my brain. ♥️ 6y

gradcat I love the title “Iced Tee!” Can‘t possibly think of what that is all about! 😂 6y
jenniferw88 @gradcat blurb from amazon for iced tee: Mystery, humor, & dogs keep the quirky residents of Arroyo Loco busy after screams fill the community kitchen. The freezer reveals pot pies, empty cartons of ice cream, & the frozen corpse of an elderly woman. Psychologist Estela Nogales & her eclectic collection of neighbors snap into action to unearth motives while the border collies pitch in with their unique skills. ⬇️ 6y
jenniferw88 As the fear of discovery escalates & danger mounts, mysterious thumps are heard from inside the victim‘s home. 6y
