The Tale of Genji | Murasaki Shikibu

I don't remember seeing anyone else share this resource yet that includes some summary and character information along with a section of photos of places referenced in the story. I specifically looked at the photos of Uji and the river as I read #Genji52 this morning.

saresmoore Neat! 6y
Lindy Thanks for sharing this. I found other resources online, but not this one. 😊 6y
batsy Oh, cool! Thank you 6y
Daisey @Lindy I found it in the study guide I downloaded through Hoopla. I figured once I was done I might see what other information or analysis it included. 6y

(Niou‘s wife): He is impossible. He has done each of the women here—every one who has at all caught his fancy. #Genji51

It piqued him that among his own sister‘s gentlewomen there should be any good-looking girl who had not allowed him to cultivate her acquaintance. #Genji52

saresmoore He is deplorable. But, then, they pretty much all are. For example, “In this way, Kaoru pleaded his case, and the Akashi Empress had no inkling of his lascivious ulterior motives.” #manipulativeKaoru 6y
Lindy @saresmoore I feel no pity for any of the men. I liked this sentence: Kaoru seemed now to have got into a state in which his life consisted solely in rushing from one senseless agitation to another. 6y

The Tale of Genji | Murasaki Shikibu

I‘m a bit ahead on Genji because I just want to finish, at this point. I really did not enjoy the experience of reading Les Misérables last year because it was just so dense and overladen with extraneous information. The Tale of Genji, in contrast, is ALL story, but I feel like I‘m reading five or six tropes over and over with only slight variations. I don‘t think I‘ve ever made such slow progress on a book before!

TrishB It‘s a big book! 6y
Daisey I‘m impressed you‘re powering on ahead. I‘m at a point where I‘m trying to catch up, but I just can‘t read more than so many pages a day before I need a break. 6y
batsy I'm about ready to be done, as well. Today's chapter in particular was a rehash of the same old love triangle, or rather, two men feeling entitled to the same woman trope. I was thinking about the early chapters and there definitely should have been more hauntings and ghostly visitations included in the narrative. And the narrative mentions bandits once, I think, but there definitely should have been a whole chapter (or two, or three!) on bandits 6y

saresmoore @batsy I couldn‘t agree more! Spoiler: there are some more supernatural occurrences to come. I also lament that there wasn‘t a sage or messianic character or really even one single likable character throughout. So many priests, yet so little wisdom! It says a lot about the author‘s outlook, I think. 6y
saresmoore @Daisey I‘ve started glossing over the poems and descriptions of court customs, as well as the more vociferous lamenting. It‘s not skimming, but it‘s not close reading anymore... 6y
saresmoore @TrishB I do like a big book, but this narrative is doing nothing to compel me to keep reading. I am learning a lot, though, and it‘s inspiring much deep thought, so I think it‘ll prove to be worth the effort. 6y
saresmoore @batsy I‘m back to amend that the supernatural element was disappointingly short-lived. Alas, everything is ephemeral. 6y
batsy @saresmoore 😂😂 6y
Daisey @batsy The bandits! I read that single line today and agree a chapter‘s diversion in that direction would have been fantastic. I also get the comparison to crumbling gothic castles you mentioned somewhere. These rural overgrown estates remind me of that as well. 6y
TrishB Good luck! I‘m not tempted to read, but do generally love big books. 6y
batsy @Daisey The author seems to have enjoyed describing those rural villas! Those descriptive passages are a nice change from the usual plot lines. 6y
shawnmooney Britta and I will finish this week and we both feel the post-Genji chapters were unnecessary and we are going thru the motions reading this next-generation rehash of what‘d been done to death in the Genji narrative proper. @Lindy @saresmoore @batsy 6y
