#BookedInTime Tudor England January 2025
@cuilin @dabbe

I have mixed feelings about this month's selection. It's an extremely well researched novel, with some interesting details of Queen Elizabeth's rein. However, I felt it was too long and repetitive. They talked about how Elizabeth did not want to get married, and how she held off all her suitors, over and over again.

Repost for @BarbaraBB

Hi all, the brackets for the #ToB25 are now live: https://www.tournamentofbooks.com/the-2025-shortlist

I‘ve been wondering if you‘d like to play along again in March and come to our own winner of the shortlist?
Please let me know if you‘d be interested, then I‘ll organize it again.

I am tagging some ToB regulars but everyone is welcome to join of course. If you‘d like to be (un)tagged, please let me know as well!

BarbaraBB You reposted already but once more certainly can‘t harm! Much appreciated 🤍🤍 2mo

Hooked_on_books I just did my initial rapid scroll through the list and I love that there‘s always a number of things on there I‘ve never even heard of. I‘ve read 27 already but I‘ll be honest, there are books on there I do not want to read! 3mo
Readerann @Hooked_on_books 27!!! 👏👏👏 I‘m with @BarbaraBB. It‘s so much fun reading all the ToB “stuff”, I can‘t seem to get to the books. 😁 3mo

1- No? My mom has intermittently claimed that my middle name- Marie was for her bff at the time 🤷‍♀️
2- I will straight binge any Elizabeth 1 historical fiction. I find her fascinating.

This #chunkster was a fantastic and in-depth read regarding Queen Elizabeth the First. If you're a fan of historic nonfiction reads I highly recommend this author. You will be given a lot of information but in a way thatbit almost reads as a work of fiction. In otherwords not like a textbook.

I did like certain aspects of this mystery set in Queen Elizabeth I‘s court such as the main character, Nicholas Holt, the younger brother of an earl, who owns a tavern and works undercover as a spy for the queen. But unfortunately, there were a couple of things that held me back from giving it a total thumbs up.
First, and the author alludes to this in her note at the end of the book, the language threw me as it was not conducive to the time 🔻

robinb period and distracted because of that. Yes, it may have been clearer in a more modern vernacular, but it just felt wrong. Second, there were stretches of explanations relating to the time period that were a bit boring and long-winded. And third, the romance triangle was murky and perplexing to me, and I felt it needed more explanation and clarity. 🔻 1y
robinb The story itself was just OK but did produce a surprise villain. I might or might not give the next one a chance. 3.25/5⭐️ 1y

The Lady Elizabeth is a fascinating story of a woman far ahead of her time-a orphaned girl haunted by the shadow of the axe, a girl who must use her wits for her very survival, and a future queen whose dramatic path to the throne shapes her future greatness. It has suspense, tragedy and intrigue that you would expect of this time. It has the strong and vivid characters we long to read about. One of Alison Weir's best novels.
