So glad I found this. A story of one man who shoulders his whole nation. Caught between what is right (fighting for democracy) and what is best (preserving his followers). I found another hero. Once again, US supports evil dictatorship and ignores human rights because Indonesia has money and partners. All Belo asks is peaceful talks. This is a strong role model. #TimorLeste #ReadingAsia2021 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Librarybelle Nice! 3y
BarbaraBB Ooh yet another one for Timor. I think you‘re the first one to find this book! 3y
Butterfinger @BarbaraBB I would not have learned about Father Belo or Timor's genocide at the hands of Indonesia if not for your challenge. Thank you. And to you @Librarybelle 3y

I‘m struggling with In Extremis and questioning whether it really fits for Timor-Leste, so I tried to find something else. The only thing that I can find available in any format, is a digital copy of the tagged book. Over my dead body am I paying that much for Kindle, especially one that I know based on genre I will most likely hate. 😩 I don‘t have Scribd - do I want to spend $10 for one month to read this? My library & hoopla don‘t have it.

Bookwormjillk I was able to get a free month of scribd a few months ago. Maybe they have a deal? 3y
DGRachel @Bookwormjillk I tried the free month a while back. I know Audible makes you wait a year. I‘m not sure about Scribd. I may try though. 3y
squirrelbrain Ugh, I struggled a bit with this one. I read it on Scribd, but I‘m UK-based so I‘m not sure if it will be on US Scribd, sometimes it‘s a bit random. I wouldn‘t even pay Qb to read it, knowing what I know! I‘m sure I had another option for this country…I‘ll go check my spreadsheet and get back to you! 3y

squirrelbrain Here it is ➡️ The Litsy blurb says Uganda, but both Goodreads and Amazon mention Timor-Leste. In the UK it‘s Qb.99 on Kindle or Qe for a used hard-copy so you never know…. 3y
DGRachel @squirrelbrain Thanks! It has been more than a year since I tried Scribd so I can use the first month free. I have an hour left of the audio of In Extremis. They did discuss the war in East Timor for 15 minutes…I‘ll check for the other book as well! 3y
squirrelbrain An hour‘s not too bad - put it on double speed! 🤣 3y
DGRachel @squirrelbrain That‘s an hour left at 1.4 speed. Any faster and the narrator sounds like a chipmunk 😂 3y
Librarybelle I would not want to spend that much on a Kindle book, either. 3y

1991: Norman Lewis was 83 when he started travelling around Indonesia, spending time in Sumatra, East Timor (pre-independence) and Irian Jaya, travelling first with his adult son and daughter and then alone. This is a part of the world I knew nothing about, and the author covers a lot of ground - history, environment, politics, ‘travel‘, and what I guess could be described as an anthropological interest.

I went in with low expectations, but really

rockpools enjoyed the first 2/3 of the book. Lewis has a journalistic style and a keen interest in what‘s going on in the region, and plays on his ‘just curious tourist‘ role to access places. He also describes his own experiences (food was a problem!) In the final part of the book he spends time staying with the indigenous tribespeople of Irian Jaya. This was more uncomfortable- partly due to terminology (constant references to primitive societies and the 3y
rockpools Stone Age, referring to the ongoing use of stone tools); partly to descriptions of the women which at times were unnecessary.

I guess I‘d have been surprised if an author of his time and background didn‘t grate at times. However, his strong wish to throw light on injustice and campaign for the rights of indigenous peoples make him an interesting character. I‘m actually sorry to finish this, and I‘d like to read more by him.

rockpools This is my #readingasia2021 for #Indonesia and #TimorLEste - one I definitely wouldn‘t have picked up otherwise. It‘s piqued my interest in the countries, and I look forward to coming back and reading Indonesian and own voices authors to explore the region further. @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle 3y

Librarybelle Great review! I love books that pique my interest in a topic or area and make me want to read more! 3y
andrew61 That looks fascinating I will definitely try and find it as I read his memoir about his wartime experience in southern Italy in the same publishers series a few years ago and loved it. 3y

Morning Litsy! Where did that week go? I‘m sure it only had 3 (very long) days in it. Here‘s my #BookReport

Finished
Notebook. 💚 The guy talks a load of entertaining rubbish 😸

Continued
A Planet of Clay, almost despite myself. Very engaging and readable but excruciatingly tough.
An Empire of the East has been my main read this week - travels through #Indonesia and pre-independence #EastTimor. Fascinating.

rockpools Started
Lean Startup. Yeah. Don‘t ask. Work. I‘ve just learnt that, despite appearances, I‘m actually working in a startup - which explains a lot 😵‍💫

Have a lovely weekend folks!

East Timor gained independence from Portugal in 1975, only to be invaded by Indonesia less than a week later. The colonial rulers paid little attention to the education of the Timorese. Anafalbetism was high and when the country finally became independent in 2002 (and chose the Portuguese name #TimorLeste) its language was mainly an oral one. This is one of the first books written about the country. Interesting.

squirrelbrain Hmmm, I don‘t think any of us have done particularly well with #easttimor! 3y
Librarybelle Interesting that this is one of the first books written about the country 3y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I agree. It‘s hard to find books about it. 3y

There aren‘t many books set in #timorleste but I found this on Scribd. It was just OK really - a lot of history and politics with only one or two really interesting parts. (I enjoyed the chapter on language).

I do wonder if it was me though, rather than the book,so maybe give it a go if you need this country for #readingasia2021 - don‘t let me put you off.

BarbaraBB I just found a book for Timor Leste too! 4y

Far From the Tree | Solomon, Andrew
post image
Pickpick

The subtitle of this book says it all. This is a book about the search for identity. Peppered with interviews of families as well as stats & citations, Solomon looks at what it‘s like for parents to raise a child that is fundamentally different from them, like one with Downs Syndrome. He does talk to a few where the parents have the same condition in chapters on dwarfism and deafness and non-hereditary conditions like being the child of rape. ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ Even when I didn‘t agree with Solomon, this #audiobook was endlessly fascinating and has given me a lot to think about. For further insights, look at my four longer previous posts. #ChunksterChallenge @Amiable The book is 962 pages and 40 hours 37 minutes on audio. I‘m really glad I decided to go for it! (edited) 4y
Cathythoughts I love this title 👌🏻❤️ 4y

youneverarrived I‘ve loved reading your updates on this Meg 🤍 it sounds like such an informative and interesting read. 4y
BarbaraBB I‘ve loved your updates. This seems a hard but important book. 4y
Redwritinghood I just watched the documentary made based on this book. Definitely worth a watch. It‘s on Hulu. 4y
Megabooks @youneverarrived thank you! It really was. 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB that definitely describes it. Thank you! 4y
Megabooks @Redwritinghood I do have Hulu! Once I get some distance from the book, I‘ll watch it. 👍🏻 4y
Cinfhen Well done, Meg!! #LiveAndLearn 🤓I need to figure out how to get Hulu to work overseas @Redwritinghood I think I‘d do better with the documentary than 40 hours of audio 🤪 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I don‘t think it‘s something I could usually do, especially how dense the material was, but I‘m glad I took on the challenge this time! 4y
Cinfhen Your brain is definitely more analytical!! I‘m glad you broke it up into summaries / I feel like I read the cliff notes xxxx 4y
FelinesAndFelonies Wow! I think it's amazing you stuck with such a long book on such challenging material! Well done! 4y
Megabooks @FelinesAndFelonies just saw this! Thank you! I was surprised how easily it flew by. Despite the length, the stories and the human connections move it along really well. 4y
Amiable This book was definitely way more interesting and engaging than you might expect — I loved it , too! 4y
Megabooks @Amiable Agreed!! 4y
Megabooks I forgot to tag this for #EastTimor #ReadingAsia2021. He spends time with a community with high hereditary deafness that have built their own sign language. @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle 4y

In 1991, #EastTimor voted for independence from Indonesia, the country that essentially took them over in 1975 when Portugal left. Instead of a smooth democratic process, Indonesia murdered civilians and tried to remove voters for independence. Here, Birmingham illustrates how he sees Australia to have stood by and allowed it to happen. I would have liked a little more background, as this is something I knew nothing about, but this is a really👇🏼

Hooked_on_books interesting read that taught me a lot. Be aware that there are some graphic depictions of murder and death in this one. #ReadingAsia2021 #TimorLeste 4y
