Infinite Jest | David Foster Wallace

Day 29 - #infinite #literaryluck

A gargantuan, mind-altering comedy about the pursuit of happiness in America. Set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family, Infinite Jest explores what entertainment is and why it has come to dominate our lives; how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.

EadieB I own this book and I need to read it soon! #infinitejest #davidfosterwallace #1001bookstoread 6y
Vinjii It took me two years to read this and I still don‘t know if I like it. 6y

Amazon has some pretty good daily deals for Labor Day. I picked a few of the books up. Worth checking out if you are a Kindle reader like me. #kindle #davidfosterwallace #joandidion #jillfilipovic

PS. It's said that Granada House was the model for IJ's Ennet House. #MaryKarr #Lit #DavidFosterWallace #DFW #InfiniteJest

merelybookish I just saw a link to an interview with Karr called "Please stop asking me about David Foster Wallace." ☺️ 7y
britt_brooke @merelybookish Haha, yes, I read that recently! Her full quote is pretty funny. 7y

britt_brooke @LeahBergen Right?! The links are fascinating. 7y
britt_brooke @LeahBergen Annnnd .... it appears that Mary Karr was the inspiration for Joelle van Dyne. There are many similarities between the character and Karr's real life (i.e. Karr's dad's nickname for her was Pokey, Joelle's dad's nickname for her was Pokie). This stuff is fascinating! 7y
LeahBergen @britt_brooke Really?? This IS fascinating. It looks like I'll be adding this to my "pick up a copy when I see it" list. ?? 7y
britt_brooke @LeahBergen She only mentions him briefly, and never says his last name, but we know who she means. 😉 7y

• yeah, i'm reading "Infinite Jest" and thinking it might be a year-long adventure. so maybe a little dip into DFW's short stories might add a little more enjoyment to my life right now? i wrote that with a question mark because he might be one of those authors for which one must acquire a taste. and that's okay. i like those authors the best. •

{ what's the most intimidating/daunting book you've ever attempted? }

KVanRead The Brothers Karamazov. I stalled out on like page 10. 😰 Maybe someday. 8y
bibliobliss @KVanRead Haven't tried that one. You're right. Someday, someday...maybe!!! 8y
MrBook I've yet to be intimidated by a book I've read ???. @BookBabe & I acquired "Bottom's Dream", and that may be a slogfest as the translation from German retains a great deal of German stylistic and punctuation ?. Which is unnecessary--a serious English translation should be completely English, just like a translation into any other language *sighs*. 8y

sisilia I'm behind schedule 😬 ... will catch up soon 💪🏻 8y
bibliobliss @sisilia I'm just now reading the foreword by Dave Eggers in the 10th anniversary edition. He's setting everything up nicely. I'm feeling a tad better about reading this one. I have been intimidated too long. People are encouraging me to try it and I'm happy to have help and motivation from others! 😊 Good luck catching up! You can do it! 8y
Laalaleighh @readage I read atlas shrugged by ayn rand, Bleak House by Charles Dickens and The Social Contract by Jean Jacques Rousseau when I was in highschool and all three of them completely intimidated me. I now have The Luminaries sitting on my TBR being very intimidating right next to infinite jest- which I'm putting off reading because so many people keep talking about bugs and I have a phobia. Oh I find David Mitchell to be intimidating as well!! 8y
JenP Ulysses and In Search of Lost Time were my two most challenging reads. I loved Brothers K but it wasn't exactly a quick easy read. 8y
bibliobliss @Laalaleighh That sounds like a heavy course load in high school! Whoa ?. Was that assigned reading or titles you read on your own?! Yes, "The Luminaries" is HUGE but also on my TBR. You don't want to try "Infinite Jest" with your Litsy buddies? Haha. It's ok, you'll get to it eventually. I have hardly cracked the cover myself. David Mitchell...haven't read him yet but "Cloud Atlas" and "Slade House" are on my TBR. 8y
bibliobliss @JenP More classics I have yet to explore! 8y
Laalaleighh @readage I read them on my own. Although I was assigned and excerpt of the social contract and decided to read the whole thing. I really do want to read infinite jest with my Litsy buddies but omg I have the biggest phobia of bugs. I can't even read about them. I've read one and a half david Mitchell's. Ghostwritten, which I thought was fabulous and number9drean which I DNFd bc too many bugs 😖. Im so intimidated by cloud atlas and Bone clocks! 8y

britt_brooke I read the DFW wiki page this morning. There's great information on him and his work there. 8y
bibliobliss @britt_brooke Awesome 👏🏼 thank you for letting me know! 8y
britt_brooke @Readage 👍🏻👍🏻 8y
smccallum @Readage he has a lot of interviews on YouTube, the two with Charlie Rose give you some good ideas of what he's about (one is alone, the other is with Franzen and Leyner) book riot released a book called 'Start Here' about reading your way into authors. I followed that and am a huge fan it recommends starting with the essays then reading some short stories and then infinite jest. I think it's free from bookriot.com 8y
bibliobliss @smccallum THANK YOU 😊 8y
