Red Harvest | Dashiell Hammett
post image
Pickpick

Red Harvest is a classic exploration of corruption and violence in the American grain. Hammett is a master of the noir detective crime novel. Characters are definitely unique. He was a Pinkerton Detective and his Continental Op is an example of that era. Dinah Brand is a 'gutsy broad' popular in the 1920's. Looking forward to reading The Glass Key novel. Recommend this to those who love noir crime.

Cloudsplitter | Russell Banks

Pickpick

Day 11 - #cloud #springintoreading

I enjoyed Cloudsplitter. Banks made the key people of the antislavery movement come to life. Narrated by John Brown's son, Owen, we learn the details of his father's passion to free the slaves and his capture at Harper's Ferry and his hanging. Informative about 19th century American life. Recommend this book to those who are interested in the antislavery movement. John Brown changed the course of history.

Theaelizabet Can‘t tell you how long this has been sitting on my shelves. One of these days... 6y

Infinite Jest | David Foster Wallace

Day 29 - #infinite #literaryluck

A gargantuan, mind-altering comedy about the pursuit of happiness in America. Set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family, Infinite Jest explores what entertainment is and why it has come to dominate our lives; how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.

EadieB I own this book and I need to read it soon! #infinitejest #davidfosterwallace #1001bookstoread 6y
Vinjii It took me two years to read this and I still don‘t know if I like it. 6y

The Heart of the Matter | Graham Greene
post image
Pickpick

Scobie, a police officer serving in West Africa, is distrusted, being scrupulously honest and immune to bribery. He falls in love but with tragic consequences. This is a terrifying depiction of a man's inner-struggle and is one of Greene's most tragic novel. It is on the 1001 books list to read before you die. I look forward to reading another of Greene's novels in the near future and recommend this book to those who classics.

Day 20 - #alien #quotsyfeb19 #1001bookstoread

I am not really a science fiction reader but I really did enjoy this story. The concept and the characters were fascinating. I read it in one sitting as it held my attention and I was curious to see how it would end. The writing has great imagery and is very thought provoking. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy science fiction or those who want to stretch beyond their normal genres.

Day 13 - #adventrecommends

I enjoyed the audio of War and Peace. Loved learning about Napoleon‘s invasion of Russia in 1812. I found the love stories centered around Natasha Rostov to be fascinating. Tolstoy‘s writing is very detailed but filled with interesting information. I would highly recommend this book to those who enjoy books about war and romance.

A Suitable Boy | Vikram Seth
post image

A monster read (1349 pages), I enjoyed it very much. I learned interesting history and religious customs of 1950's India. The characters began to feel like friends to me. I enjoyed reading about the many suitors that Lata Mehra had and how her mother tried to manipulate her marriage.
Torn between 3 men, I believe that Lata finally made the right choice. I can't wait to read A Suitable Girl, when it is published on January 10, 2019.

Nute Way to go! It is an accomplishment. 6y
