A nonfiction account of the history of American bookstores. I loved that we start with Benjamin Franklin & continue until Barnes & Noble and Amazon change the landscape of bookshops. Along the way we learn about gay rights and black-owned shops that acted more like community hubs than a traditional store. I loved traveling to each new space and hearing their stories. If this doesn‘t want to make you support independents, I don‘t know what will.

Delightful. Reminded me a little of the Japanese books about the coffee shop . Philosophical. I think there is something in it for most people to relate to. Comforting, reassuring and thoughtful. Many books mentioned that I have read , some I haven‘t and would like to now. I can see why it was a best seller. Loved the way the lady with the dog walked the pages inside the book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a slow, but truly fascinating, read. I dipped in / out for a few weeks, adsorbing this delve into American book store history. Readers should want to know this! I know my appreciation has grown. A huge “Thank You” to those who, no matter the capacity or circumstance, put books into our hands and brains.

PS. I especially loved the chapter on my local indie, the incredible Parnassus.

TheBookHippie I agree I read this in January it‘s very good. 5d

This was high on my TBR because it checks all those book-lover boxes: a woman leaves her unfulfilling life & job to start a bookshop, which grows into a place for others to also find purpose & healing. I‘m fascinated by how deeply I connected with the book, when the writing felt so…plain. The topics were so relevant to where I‘ve been in my life over the past few years: feeling a disconnect and discontent in my job, then leaving it to pursue ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) vocational dreams that feel far from “successful” or socially normative. But I really didn‘t connect with the writing itself. It‘s slow-paced, yes—but I don‘t mind that. It also took its time getting to any depth with its characters. I felt like the characters were kept at arms‘ length from the reader for most, if not all of the narrative—there could have been so much more depth to explore that was never touched on. ⤵️ 1w
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) I‘ve had the same feeling about the writing in other books translated from Korean or Japanese, and while in the past I‘ve chalked it up to the translation, I‘m wondering if it‘s more a feature of the original languages themselves (and/or cultural writing norms) that makes the translations feel so plain and even distant. All of that said, I did really enjoy this book—I just got hung up on the writing. 1w

I‘m really enjoying this book, probably because it has a lot about books and coffee! And I just love the idea of having all day to think about a film (or a book) and discovering something special.

Suet624 I love that idea too. 2w

Last year, for my birthday, I got my 4th round of chemo 😔. Needless to say, my birthday was a bust. This year, to make up for it, my husband took me on a bookstore tour in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area. We hit 5 bookstores, including this gem: Story Line Books, housed in St. Paul's Union Depot. With a subtle train theme, the charm of the historic train station, and a wonderfully curated selection, this was a great stop! #supportindiebookstores
