Day seven of #bannedbooksweek I‘m showing off BELOVED. Definitely a very hard book to read. I can understand why this book would be challenged but it‘s definitely a book people should have the option of reading. This book has been challenged pretty much every year since it‘s been published. Reasons are “includes scenes of violent sex, including gang rape, and too graphic and extreme for teenagers.”•

Linsy One of the banned authors that‘s still on my TBR. Love that photo! (edited) 6y

Day six of #bannedbooksweek I‘m showing off my favorite challenged books because it‘s just the most ridiculous challenge ever. I cannot roll my eyes far enough back. These are the three MOST challenged books of the HP series that I could find. The entire series has been challenged at one time or another. The most frequent complaint is that the books “promote Wicca practice.” Seriously? 😂•

Linsy Beautiful! 6y
Linsy Seriously, these are the three most challenged? I thought at first you picked them for the pic because they go so well together! 6y
KuehlerBookStop @Linsy yep! Most challenged. I think one year all 6 were on this list. 7 hadn‘t come out yet! These editions are gorgeous! 6y

Day five of #bannedbooksweek I‘m showing off ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES and ELEANOR & PARK. E&P challenged for use of vulgar language and both books challenged for being “pornographic.” Both of these books touch on subjects that are extremely relevant today. Depression/anxiety, fitting in, finding yourself, and love. These are things everyone needs to read about, things people need to be able to relate to and empathize with. #bannedbooksbonanza

Linsy Agreed! Kids need to see themselves in the media they consume and how these subjects are handled. (edited) 6y
KuehlerBookStop @Linsy completely agree! 6y

GingerAntics @Linsy #bannedbooksbonanza one, lone, brave high school girl not too far from me, in Katy, TX, started a petition (that got nearly 4,000 signatures) and an after school book club when this book was removed from the libraries in her district. She even spoke in front of the school board. Now, students can check out this book from any jrh/hs library with parental permission. 6y
Texreader Whoa wait...are you in Texas?? 6y
GingerAntics @Texreader yeah...I‘m guessing you are. lol I‘m up in Dallas. 6y
Linsy @GingerAntics Yaaasss!!! I love these kind of stories! Makes me wish I was that awesome in high school. What a great role model! 6y
GingerAntics @Linsy right? I spent most of high school cowering. 6y

Hooray! I finished my #BookAWeekChallenge with Howl for Banned Books Week! Then I watched the docudrama Howl with James Franco. When he reads the poem it‘s animated so I definitely recommend it for others who have read this.
Dirty enough to warrant a trial? No, but I looked up all the names mentioned & got quite an education!
Thank you for hosting and giving me encouragement @TheReadingMermaid ! 🧜🏾‍♀️

Clwojick What! Eleanore and park is banned?! 6y
Andrea313 @Clwojick Technically E&P is a "challenged" book; I don't believe that any districts have successfully removed it at this point. Though one did cancel a planned appearance by the author after a firestorm of complaints by parents. 6y
Linsy The Color Purple! 🙌🙌🙌 6y

The Complete Persepolis | Marjane Satrapi

An Illinois school district tried to ban this book in 2013, but the students fought back.

They blasted their protest across the internet, went on tv, protested, “checked out all library copies of the book,” and were just basically magnificent. The district retrenched.

The kids really are all right!

jmofo I really enjoyed this one! She‘s so fiesty and smart! 😍 6y
Linsy @jmofo Me too!!! I think that it‘s one that every kid should read, especially here in the states. It taught me so much. I think a reread might be in order! 6y
GingerAntics I love when the kids rebel in a positive way. Why was this one banned? 6y

Linsy @GingerAntics Me too! They were worried about graphic language and imagery and that the kids — 7th and 11th graders — weren‘t ready to be exposed to the material. 6y
GingerAntics 🙄 That always blows my mind. Kids say worse than most books, anyway. They‘re really not learning anything new in that front. Sheesh. 6y
Billypar What a great story: good for them! Though I'm baffled that there are people who would consider the risk of inappropriateness to be greater than the risk of not learning the historical narrative that Persepolis chronicles. 6y
