Just Call My Name | Holly Goldberg Sloan

#authororcharacterwhosharesyourname I had no idea there were this many books with characters that have my name (list courtesy of GR). Then again, these don't really seem to be the kind of books I'd normally read. 😜#day9 #riotgrams

#riotgrams Day 9: #authororcharacterwhosharesyourname
There's something about this prompt that made my mind go blank. I know I've never read a book by or about an Abbe (not short for Abigail!) but there have to have been some Abbys/Abbeys/Abigails but I couldn't think of a single one. So I went with a book I haven't read yet by the equally unique spelled Abbi Glines. (Though if you can think of any Abbe books...)

The Sea Garden | Deborah Lawrenson

#riotgrams #authororcharacterwhosharesyourname I've never fond of my name which I guess hit its heyday in the 60-70s as there were 3 in my kindergarten class. I was forced to be Debra which I hadn't learned to spell since I went by Debbie & I was traumatized.😳Here's 2 authors & a character who share my name (not the spelling for Lawrenson but I forgive her because she writes beautiful books & is a sweet person). Macomber is probably the most...

DebinHawaii ...prolific Debbie I can think of but I don't think I've read any of her books. Deb Morgan (Debra (show) or Deborah (book) spellings) is serial killer Dexter's sister & goes by Deb which I mostly do now because everyone always shortened it anyway! 😆 (edited) 8y
Suzze Deborah was popular in the 50's too. I had a couple of them in my class along with two other Susans (my given name), and at least a few Cathy/Kathys. 8y
ValerieAndBooks Ha...so funny, the book I picked for this prompt was written by Macomber! I haven't read her, either. 8y

#riotgrams Day 9: #authororcharacterwhosharesyourname There are a ton of reasons why I'll eventually read War and Peace (a love of Tolstoy, my family's Russian heritage, bragging rights) but one of them is Natasha Rostova, a character who shares my name! I don't see my name very often, though, so it always kind of weirds me out...

RadicalReader @Natasha.c.barnes do you think then you're reading a story about yourself? 8y
Natasha.C.Barnes @RadicalReader I'm not sure! Not literally, of course, but maybe a feeling like when you overhear someone talking about you...it just jolts me out of the story for a second. But I've never read a whole novel with that name used for a major character, so I bet doing that would eventually take that feeling away. 8y
Larkken I hear you! I never hear or read my name when it's not a direct address to me. I've often wondered what it's like for people with the opposite problem, but I just can't even fathom it. 8y

Flight Behavior | Barbara Kingsolver

I didn't read my first Barbara Kingsolver book until 2015. For some reason, I always felt intimidated by her writing. But upon reading Flight Behavior, I discovered how wrong I was. The book was a delight, and I'm excited to read more of her work!

FairyHighRoad I love The Bean Trees and it's sequel! Those are two of my favorite books 8y
Lmstraubie @LagerthaShieldMaiden I loved The Bean Trees also. I didn't realize it had a sequel! What is the sequel's title? 8y

FairyHighRoad @Lmstraubie the sequel is Pigs in Heaven. I think it's as good as The Bean Trees. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute I just picked up a copy of "The Bean Trees" from the Goodwill the other day. Glad to know about the sequel so I can watch for it. 8y
Leftcoastzen Good for you! I was in Tucson when she first published fiction. Didn't read her till much later. Could not believe the raves were deserved, I was wrong 8y
quicksilver The Poisonwood Bible is my favorite book of all time. I highly highly recommended it. 8y
minkyb I was late to start reading her as well. Absolutely loved 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Shemac77 I think I found Prodigal Summer at a book sale last year! @LagerthaShieldMaiden I have both of those too. @quicksilver It's definitely in my plans! @minkyb I keep hearing good things about Lacuna. Need to find a used copy! 8y

Although we spell it differently, an enigmatic writer who shares my first name is Sean Virgo. Maltese by birth, he came to Canada in 1966 and has written several works of fiction and poetry. He was the writer-in-residence in Saskatoon in the early 90s and was the MC for an AIDS Awareness Week reading I helped organize of the writings of HIV-positive writers. (continued below) #authororcharacterwhosharesyourname #riotgrams

shawnmooney What a generous, soulful and open-hearted straight guy! A few years later I was living in Toronto and lugged all of his books which I'd expressly acquired for the purpose to a Harbourfront reading and he took me out for tea and signed them all. I haven't heard much about him since. How ridiculous is it that I have yet to read any of his books? 8y
LeahBergen I've never heard of him! 8y
shawnmooney Oh yeah, just remembered this part: I had to write the GRE exam early the next morning after that AIDS awareness reading. When I got home after the horrible exam, there was a lovely, heartfelt message on my answering machine from Sean Virgo hoping the test had gone well (it had not) and warmly congratulating me on the success of the reading. ❤❤ 8y

This is the only Jenny I can think of, crazy because it is such a common name! But this movie came out when I was in school, and for years people would say, "I love you jennay....."

RadicalReader @ReadingEnvy oddly enough Jenny from Forrest Gump is the only one I can think of too lol 8y
slategreyskies I like Jenny Han. :) 8y

I knew that both my names were in Stephen King books, I just had to remember which ones: UR and Under the Dome. Another reason he's one of my favourites. #authororcharacterwhosharesyourname #riotgrams

So finding #authororcharacterwhosharesyourname was hard. I know Rowley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid thanks to my kids and students, but I went with this author (whose book I haven't read yet) because it's the last name. #riotgrams

#AuthorOrCharacterWhoSharesYourName I haven't read this yet but I've got a thing for memoirs about people leaving fundamentalist or orthodox religious groups (and cults, too). Leah is a Hebrew name and found in the Old Testament ... but I was named after the Roy Orbison song. 😒 #RiotGrams

BookBabe That's awesome! Roy Orbison is magnificent. ❤ 8y
Krisjericho I also have a thing for those kind of memoirs! 8y

ReadingEnvy Love those memoirs too. I think we've had this conversation already. But this is definitely on the list. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage This one's on my TBR too! 8y
drbethandherkindle Oh boy I love this genre too! 8y
Hobbinol Better than being named Ooby Dooby😉 (edited) 8y
LeahBergen 😂 I had to search for that song and give it a listen! 8y
Krisjericho @rubyslippersreads That one looks fantastic! I actually used to be Mormon and resigned from that church, so I find those ones particularly interesting. 8y
MrBook Interesting cover. 8y
LeahBergen @ReadingEnvy I think we DID just talk about this. 😂 8y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads That sounds good! 8y
