Romance, suspense, and World War II mystery are woven together in three artfully linked novellasrich in drama and steeped in atmospherefrom the critically acclaimed author of The Lantern. The Sea Garden On the lush Mediterranean island of Porquerolles off the French coast, Ellie Brooke, an award-winning British landscape designer, has been hired to restore a memorial garden. Unsettled by its haunted air and the bitterness of the gardens owner, an elderly woman who seems intent on undermining her, Ellie finds that her only ally on the island is an elusive war historian. . . . The Lavender Field Near the end of World War II, Marthe Lincel, a young blind woman newly apprenticed at a perfume factory in Nazi-occupied Provence, finds herself at the center of a Resistance cell. When tragedy strikes, she faces the most difficult choice of her life . . . and discovers a breathtaking courage she never expected. A Shadow Life Iris Nightingale, a junior British intelligence officer in wartime London, falls for a French agent. But after a secret landing in Provence results in terrible Nazi reprisals, he vanishes. When France is liberated, Iris is determined to uncover the truth. Was he the man he claimed to be? Ingeniously interconnected, this spellbinding triptych weaves three parallel narratives into one unique tale of love, mystery, and murder. The Sea Garden is a vivid and absorbing chronicle of love and loss in the fog of warand a penetrating and perceptive examination of the impulses and circumstances that shape our lives.

A novel written as 3 stories. At first I didn‘t understand and even wondered if I misunderstood this was a novel. At the end of the 3rd story it all makes sense and the author‘s notes explain she wrote this way so the reader would feel like they were separated from the rest of the underground cells in the resistance. So, I found the 1st story just too creepy for my tastes. Then the 2nd story was fabulous. Keep going. Don‘t give up.

Quiet rainy Saturday. 1st part I wasn't sure what was going on. Checked Goodreads reviews and saw that it was 3 Novellas that came together in the end. Once I started 2nd part I was hooked. Excepting getting up for more tea, I finished book in one 'sitting'. Few unanswered questions at the end but that went with not knowing all about people who disappeared in WW2. 📚 #springstacks #lazybookday #mountbr #covercaughtmyeye #literarygardens

Leave a comment with your favorite purple spine book and a little snippet of what it's about. I really would like to collect more purple spine books but preferably would like to enjoy them. Out of this stack The Sea Garden is my most recent read purple book and I really enjoyed the story. The book follows 3 different stories that all come together and wrap up nicely in the end. There's war, love, and mystery. I loved it!

Part of the story is somewhat contemporary while another part is set in WWII. A lot of good writing and conflicting and convoluted plot points.

Day26 #AprilBookShowers #gardentitle Here are the titles with 'garden' in them from my Goodreads 'read' stack. Four novels--several quite foodie, 😋🍴 two cozy mysteries from a series set in English gardens, a book on growing gardens of herbs for tea and an herb garden cookbook. Some definite favorites here--even if my thumb tends to be more brown than green! 🍏🌸🌳🌻🌱💚

#riotgrams #authororcharacterwhosharesyourname I've never fond of my name which I guess hit its heyday in the 60-70s as there were 3 in my kindergarten class. I was forced to be Debra which I hadn't learned to spell since I went by Debbie & I was traumatized.😳Here's 2 authors & a character who share my name (not the spelling for Lawrenson but I forgive her because she writes beautiful books & is a sweet person). Macomber is probably the most...

DebinHawaii ...prolific Debbie I can think of but I don't think I've read any of her books. Deb Morgan (Debra (show) or Deborah (book) spellings) is serial killer Dexter's sister & goes by Deb which I mostly do now because everyone always shortened it anyway! 😆 (edited) 8y
Suzze Deborah was popular in the 50's too. I had a couple of them in my class along with two other Susans (my given name), and at least a few Cathy/Kathys. 8y
ValerieAndBooks Ha...so funny, the book I picked for this prompt was written by Macomber! I haven't read her, either. 8y

I didn't really get into this book at first, and then all the sudden I was sucked into the story! The separate story lines confused me at first and I didn't get what the author was doing, but then I couldn't wait to see how they all connected!

Perfect book for a summer morning on the lanai. Three stories one present day, two WWII era, linked together w/ a single mystery. Lush writing made me feel the warm breezes & smell the ocean & lavender.I paired it w/ Provençal White Bean/Artichoke Spread on blog. E-book on sale for $1.99 right now.
