When I visited the National Gallery, many years ago, this painting by Joseph Wright of Derby stopped me in my tracks. I‘ve never forgotten it. It‘s disturbing but fascinating at the same time.

I really enjoyed this book about 17th-century Dutch art! The audiobook is read by the author, a British art critic & historian. I listened while following along in the print edition, which has many full-colour illustrations of the paintings described. Laura Cumming‘s father was also a painter & so there‘s a lovely memoir aspect also, and thoughtful remarks on what art contributes to our lives.

-Paintings can take you anywhere, but they are also a land in themselves, a society, a place to be.

Found many artists to research further. The methodology &structure of this book is very well done. The focus was on painters & sculptors, there were also notations for fiber art, photographers, performance art & more
The answer to The Story of Art by Ernst Gombrich (published in 1950, included no women until the 16th edition which added 1 woman) the intro might be a lil “Girl Power 101” feminism but the art, &stories behind the art, are still good

When Robert (my son) was about 5 we visited my brother who was then living in Brooklyn. We went to the MOMA & Robert was enthralled with Starry Night. That experience resulted in his lifelong love of art.

marleed That is so cool. I love when you can point to one experience in a child and see the positive impact it had on him as an adult🌠🌠🌌 6mo
