Gone Bamboo | Anthony Bourdain

Pickpick

Finished my reading Bourdain year! I will make a larger post about it soon. This book didn‘t work for me on audio but did in print. The badass couple at the center are obviously Tony and first wife Nancy. Lots of sex, lots of guns and killing, and a fair amount of n-words. 😬

When a mob informant comes to Saint Maarten, it upends the lives of Henry and Frances. In the past, he‘s done some mob work but fights to keep his slice of paradise.

BarbaraBB You did it! Good job! Who are in the photo? 1w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB it‘s me at about 19 with my dad‘s parents! 💜 1w
BarbaraBB I thought it was you but because the other two couldn‘t be your parents (too old) I thought maybe it was your mom. Lovely photo 🩷 1w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I just realized my grandmother in that picture is the age my mother is now. Crazy! 1w

Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook: Strategies, Recipes, and Techniques of Classic Bistro Cooking | Anthony Bourdain, Jose de Meirelles, Philippe Lajaunie, Robert DiScalfani

If you want to cook classic French dishes, this is a good cookbook. However, it requires access to a good butcher and ordered specialty supplies for many recipes. It‘s not one I‘ll be referring to often, but I enjoyed Tony‘s asides and advice. I think Appetites, his later home cookbook with recipes from his travels, is the more visually interesting, easier to cook from book…except when he recommends buying $200 cans of tuna…

When it first came out, I just wasn‘t ready for this book. Now that a number of years have gone by, the time felt right. This is an amazing read filled with anecdotes from the people who knew him and constructed by Laurie Woolever into a narrative that was much better than I even hoped.

Get Jiro! | Anthony Bourdain, Joel Rose

Wasn‘t a fan of this. My least favorite part of watching/reading Bourdain‘s works are his opinions about America‘s food culture. In his graphic novel, a corporate chef and a locavore chef battle for control of the upscale dining market. But Jiro, an edo-style sushi chef, and other upholders of food traditions battle back for control of America‘s stomachs. I also never appreciate his fat shaming. That really kills me about him. #hoopla

I‘ve been a fan of Anthony Bourdain since the No Reservations days and have read all of his non-fiction (including a couple co-written with this author), so this has been on my Kindle TBR for ages. I was a bit disappointed with the Roadrunner documentary, so I was happy that this book delved a lot deeper into Bourdain‘s life before Kitchen Confidential and the early TV days before he was a household name. Unfortunately, 👇🏼 (cont‘d)

Kimberlone I do think this book had a similar flaw to the documentary, in placing far too much blame on his last relationship for the chaos of the end of his life (and eventual suicide), rather than putting the responsibility with him (an incredibly successful, rich, 60-something man with full autonomy, but plenty of decades-long personal demons that preceded that relationship). 7mo

Bourdain‘s graphic novel collaborator, Joel Rose, finished this two years after Tony‘s death. The artwork in this exploration of Japanese food-related horror tales was excellent, but the copy felt unfinished. I plan to try his other graphic novels on #hoopla that were finished before his death. This one is available there, too, but I took advantage of my library‘s hard copy. Between a pick and a so-so.

JenReadsAlot Oh I need to check this out! 8mo
Megabooks @JenReadsAlot yeah, I didn‘t know he had written graphic novels until earlier this year! 8mo

Appetites: A Cookbook | Anthony Bourdain

Why did I read a cookbook cover-to-cover that I can‘t eat 90% of the recipes in? I‘m still not sure, but it‘s Tony. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ Is this going to be your go-to cookbook? No, unless you live in a city with access to a lot wider variety and better quality ingredients than I have in my large town, and you have more speed and fluency in the kitchen than I do. He scores point on not using complicated equipment though. #borrownotbuy on #hoopla!

Megabooks Also, it‘s a bit sad reading a family friendly cookbook when we now know his marriage was crumbling and he had started to date Asia, who was a problematic girlfriend at best. And Ariane, who is pictured without showing her face, is growing up without a dad. 😢 (edited) 9mo
