Pickpick

Tulipomania and the Golden Age of Dutch Art entwined together so tightly that one can't tell the difference between lust and greed.

The climax brings to mind the moment when George Bailey of Its A Wonderful Life becomes unhinged toward Uncle Billy.

An innocent act brings the downfall of several characters.

Readergrrl I belong to a fine arts studio and one of our instructors is Carlo Russo who is a floral oil painter of the Dutch Masters style. He has taught us so much about tulip mania! I will show him this book! You should check out his work. His tulip paintings are gorgeous!! 🌷 2d

He has seen cities to dream about: the gleaming domes of Constantinople; the ravishing, mirrored streets of Venice, corrupt and seductive, like Amsterdam's wanton sister.

While reading the tagged book for #FoodandLit, I enjoyed an excellent Gouda from a local business run by a family that had immigrated to Canada from The Netherlands.

I visited their farm once and asked the cheesemakers for their personal favourite, out of all the flavoured and aged types of Gouda they offered. They didn't hesitate -- it was the plainest and mildest basic one that they preferred to eat themselves!

Pickpick

A low pick. This feels rather dated and the writing seems a bit awkward in places (this could be because of the translation). However, I like the quirky detectives and can see myself warming up to them even more as I continue the series.

That was...underwhelming. So little was actually revealed that I might even pick up the sequel in hope of getting some closure. The ending feels extremely open and after 400 pages I'd like something with more substance to it. On the bright side, there was a lot of Dutch history, food and culture depicted.

Have been eating Vla pudding all of last week since they come in 1l packs😂

BarbaraBB Cool that you‘ve been eating vla. It‘s still quite popular amongst children. I haven‘t eaten it in years! 1w
Lunakay @BarbaraBB I love all pudding-style desserts, but that's a favourite because it's such a lovely, light and creamy option🤩 And the duo is just amazing🤤 1w
Texreader This book was a thin pick for me. 1w

Wow………🥺

I had the unique experience of reading this diary when I was the same age as Anne Frank when she wrote the first entry. I am also half German. The impact, to say the least, was profound. War, no matter where, no matter when, affects and victimizes children the most. When will we ever learn??? 💔

Librarybelle Thanks for sharing! 2w

SCORE!!!!!!!

Did anyone watch Masters of the Air - Tom Hanks and Steve Spielberg miniseries of "The Bloody Hundredth"? My favorite part was in the last episode when they did not fill the plane with bombs but food parcels for the Dutch even though there were still Nazis in the Netherlands. After they made the drop off, they saw tulips formed in the words, "Thanks, Yanks." It still fills me with tears.
