House Without Windows: And Eepersip's Life There
House Without Windows: And Eepersip's Life There | Barbara Newhall Follett
7 posts | 8 read | 18 to read
The House Without Windows is an imaginative child's name for the world of untouched nature - because that world is itself nothing but one clear window upon beauty, which is a child's reality. The romantic story, printed exactly as written by a nine-year-old girl, is a clear and delicate record of discontent with ordinary pedestrian reality - with mere human parents and what they can provide. In meadows and woodland, by the sea, on the icy crags of mountains, the child - heroine, a runaway seeker, learns to understand the whispered language of nature. The story has something to say to children and perhaps even more to all who are interested in children. The volume contains an adequate explanatory note by the author's father.

Beautiful descriptions of nature but the plot was a little flat for me. Amazing that it was written by a 12 year old though...
The illustrations by Jackie Morris are lovely.

#midwintersolace Since I just finished this one yesterday and it‘s still playing in my mind it seems only natural to tag it for our #fridaynightshare as the theme is a perfect fit. Check out my review for thoughts.

This is a joyful fantasy about a young girl who rejects society and runs away to live in nature, filled with lovely descriptions of natural beauty. But the story behind the story is even more interesting. The author wrote this at 9 years old, and when the original was destroyed in a fire recreated it over the next few years. It was published by Knopf in 1926 when she was 12, and it made quite a splash.👇🏼

IndoorDame When she was 25 she walked out of an unhappy marriage, and despite efforts to find her, was never heard from again. The fact that her life mirrored this eerily prescient early novel gave rise to widespread speculation for a time. There are so many feminist parables to be found in her life and her work. And so many questions left by both the child author and the adult. 11mo

Fanciful tale about a child who will not be tamed. The author was a child herself when she wrote it (9 then published when she was 12 in 1927). A very descriptive and wordy nature tale where a young girl refuses to cave to domestication and runs away to live in nature never to return home again. Interestingly enough the author disappeared in adulthood never to be seen again 🤔 i say 3.5 stars but i will round up to 4
