The Funeral Dress: A Novel | Susan Gregg Gilmore
7 posts | 4 read | 20 to read
A deeply touching Southern story filled with struggle and hope. Emmalee Bullard and her new baby are on their own. Or so she thinks, until Leona Lane, the older seamstress who sat by her side at the local shirt factory where both women worked as collar makers, insists Emmalee come and live with her. Just as Emmalee prepares to escape her hardscrabble life in Red Chert holler, Leona dies tragically. Grief-stricken, Emmalee decides shell make Leonas burying dress, but there are plenty of people who don't think the unmarried Emmalee should design a dress for a Christian woman - or care for a child on her own. But with every stitch, Emmalee struggles to do what is right for her daughter and to honor Leona the best way she can, finding unlikely support among an indomitable group of seamstresses and the towns funeral director. In a moving tale exploring Southern spirit and camaraderie among working women, a young mother will compel a town to become a community. Now with Extra Libris material, including a readers guide and bonus contentFrom the Trade Paperback edition.

THREAD THE NEEDLE

A child herself, unwed, a baby, no mother, not attending school, an abusive father, and no place to go.  How much more could Emmalee take?

Emmalee Bullard quit school because her father told her he was tired of taking care of her, and she needed to get a job.  She fortunately was hired at the town's “SEWING” factory.

Featuring THE FUNERAL DRESS by Susan Gregg Gilmore.

A child herself, unwed, a baby, no mother, not attending school, working at a sewing factory, an abusive father, and no place to go. How much more could Emmalee take?

THE FUNERAL DRESS will leave you with a lingering warmth and concern for the characters as you close the cover. Make sure THE FUNERAL DRESS is part of your "must read" list. 5/5

Tired

The title isn‘t very uplifting, but the book is a MUST READ.

“Emmalee Bullard quit school because her father told her he was “tired” of taking care of her, and she needed to get a job.

You will fall in love with Emmalee, feel her pain, and want to hug her. 5/5”

My least favorite & favorite covers for the hour 42 challenge #24in48
My least favorite is a thumbnail from audible. I don‘t think it was ever a cover on hard copies. I loved the book but hate seeing that image in my library. My favorite was one of those instances I can‘t explain. For whatever reason, the cover just fills me with love.

#JanuaryReads #Dressesoncovers OK, there is no dress on the cover, except the word dress. But there are spools of thread which will help make a dress. And well today I chose to live this quote from Dead Poet Society: "I want you to find your own walk right now. Your own way of striding, pacing. "

Godmotherx5 I had that book in my hand this morning. I'm glad you posted it. Did you read it? Susan Gregg Gilmore is underrated. 8y
LisaJo @Godmotherx5 I have not read it yet - on TBR. I got it a couple years back when I saw Susan at the Alabama Book Festival. And then I saw her in Hoover Alabama at Southern Voices. Both times she was delightful. 8y
Godmotherx5 I met her in Michigan through Books on the Nightstand. She is a lovely person. 8y

Emmalee is a girl in the South who has a rough home life. A strong will, a loving heart & a touch of innocence motivate Emmalee to do what is right. While youth may be on her side, her elders clash over what is right & wrong. As they bicker, Emmalee grows up faster than she ever thought she could. I'm always searching for the book that warms me the way The Funeral Dress did. #under-hypedbook #augustphotochallenge @TheSpinecrackersBookClub

LisaJo I was lucky enough to see the author of this book at two different book of events in Alabama. One at the Alabama Book Festival and the second at Southern Voices. 8y
Godmotherx5 @LisaJo Really? Isn't she great? I met her at an event in Michigan. The story she told about her research for this book was fascinating. 8y
LisaJo @Godmotherx5 she is great! I so enjoyed her research story too. 8y

I went to a funeral yesterday; and was so outdone when a lady on the pew in front of me whipped out her phone and started taking pictures of our mayor when he got up to make remarks. I was like ... Really, Lady? You gon' jes sit up in a funeral and take pictures for Facebook? Whew! Had to get that out. As for this book, I'm adding it to my TBR. Ironic how that worked out, huh? I was just looking for a book about funerals for my rant.

scripturient Oh no, that sounds horrible. I hate how so many people nowadays seem to have lost what was formerly known as manners. :( 8y
BookishFeminist Ugh! That's the worst. So disrespectful at a funeral. 😔 I've seen articles online of teenagers taking selfies with the casket at wakes and stuff before too, and it makes me really question where people's heads are sometimes. 8y
Matilda Lack of common sense and basic respect is at an all time high. 8y
