A low pick; not as good as I expect from Kingfisher. The narrative style is a bit twee and though certainly spooky, nothing that happens makes much sense. But the strong character of Rhea made me enjoy the book more as it went on, especially when she's faced with a “test“ that she fails with flying colors.

I lovely , dark fairytale story without the romance. Quite the opposite actually, where a young girl is told she is to marry the local lord. When she visits his house, things are much darker than she feared. Not my favorite T. Kingfisher book, but a solid read. 4⭐️

This #FairytaleRetelling of #Bluebeard makes for a fun and fast listen! I really love Kingfisher‘s books and this YA story shares some of the dark imagery of her books for adults— as well as some of the humor. Rhea, a miller‘s daughter, finds herself in the impossible position of being forced to marry a mysterious nobleman. When she travels to his home, with the unexpected aid of a hedgehog, she soon discovers that there are darker secrets afoot!

This was a very quick read. Could hardly put it down. It was really creepy in places, I thought I might not like it but I do like it so much!

This is a low pick for me.

It was a pretty decent #BlueBeard retelling, but I wanted more from it. The villain was a bit wishy washy, the world building needed a bit more explanation, and I didn‘t feel for any of the characters really.

The premise was good though, and it was an easy read!
15 year old Rhea finds herself betrothed to a lord, and discovers that not only is she not the only wife, but they are trapped.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really loved this adaption of the Bluebeard story. The author did an incredible job describing each wife including the wife who aligns herself with her abuser. Really well written fantasy story. The only part I did not like was Rhea‘s treatment of a swan on the beginning of the book. It turned me off her character. But the other wives ended up redeeming the book for me.

A retelling of Bluebeard but the wives save themselves. I enjoyed it. Rhea and her hedgehog familiar are the best. The villain could have been better. (I wrote a little more in my blog post.)

This novel brilliantly mixes a creepy setting and a funny narration. The result is a story that makes you hold your breath AND laugh consecutively. The characters feel real and are very different from each other. Many elements can seem familiar, but they work well to create an enjoyable read. I was looking for a short book that would be easy to read: this was a perfect fit.

A light and easy to read YA fantasy with a very relatable heroine, a good sense of humour, and lots of heart. I enjoyed THE SEVENTH BRIDE but it didn't quite have the charm and humour of her more adult fantasies.

I'm only a few chapters in but already the writing style irritates me. I will definitely finish it, but I now understand why some of the reviews complained about "simplistic writing".

I also wish he took more time to describe his characters. The main antagonist (maybe? still early) is given half a sentence of description, and the protagonist barely more. I know more about her father's mill and the process of milling flour than I do about her ?

I've always loved the story of Bluebeard and am obsessed with retellings of it. I'm super excited to get into this book. I just started listening to it today. I'm always fascinated by the different takes authors have on the story. I hope it's good and I haven't jinxed it.

Breakfast and a book. T. Kingfisher's The Raven and the Reindeer is very cooling on a warm September morning in New Orleans. Alas, it is only in eBook, so I can't tag that one. I am enjoying it.
