World, Chase Me Down
World, Chase Me Down: A Novel | Andrew Hilleman
11 posts | 7 read | 31 to read
A rousing, suspenseful debut novelTrue Grit meets Catch Me If You Canbased on the forgotten true story of a Robin Hood of the American frontier who pulls off the first successful kidnapping for ransom in U.S. history Once the most wanted man in America, Pat Crowe is a forgotten folk hero who captivated the nation as an outlaw for economic justice. World, Chase Me Down resurrects him, telling the electrifying story of the first great crime of the last century: how in 1900 the out-of-work former butcher kidnapped the teenage son of Omahas wealthiest meatpacking tycoon for a ransom of $25,000 in gold, and then burgled, safe-cracked, and bond-jumped his way across the country and beyond, inciting a manhunt that was dubbed the thrill of the nation and a showdown in the court of public opinion between the haves and have-notsall the while plotting a return to the woman he never stopped loving. As if channeling Mark Twain and Charles Portis, Andrew Hilleman has given us a character who is bawdy and soulful, grizzled, salty, and hard-drinking, and with a voice as unforgettable as that of Lucy Marsden in Alan Gurganuss Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells Allan anti-hero you cant help rooting for. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This book accompanied with a good bowl of Haft Mewa (7 different nuts soaked together on the occasion of Afghan New Year to make a tempting snack) makes a perfect afternoon read. It has so far given me some mind-boggling slangs & phrases to ponder upon. 😉🤨

I just couldn't get into it... Part of it was that this was based on an actual historical figure I knew nothing about, so I kinda want to read about the facts first. It wasn't bad, I just realized I had no interest in reading any further. I might try it again at a later date.

DrexEdit How could I not know John Leguizamo had a book out!? Must place hold immediately! 😊 7y
TieDyeDude @DrexEdit I'm such a fan of his. Meet him once after a show. Great guy. He also has out a prose biography and a collection of scripts from his HBO specials. 7y

Mehso-so

There is a lot to recommend this book: the plot moves and some of the writing is quite dynamic. But ultimately, it falls short. This story cries out to be a character piece, but the author can't quite take the time to fully invest in Pat Crowe. The setting of Omaha at the turn of the 20th century held great promise, but the story as told could've been set anywhere.

#TBRtemptation post! This just-released historical Western debut is like "True Grit" meeting "Catch Me If You Can". Pat Crowe was once America's most wanted man. His story is fictionalized in this book. In 1900, an unemployed butcher kidnapped an Omaha tycoon's son for a $25,000 gold ransom. Then he burgled & bond-jumped across the country, inciting a sensational nation-wide manhunt. Meanwhile, he looks for his lady. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

LeahBergen I already had this one stacked. 👍🏼 8y
RAR I know my decision to call this "noir" conflicts with all the other genre tags attached to it, but I stand by what I said. Besides, I know the author so I have inside info. ;) 8y

For #signed Sunday, a book I am looking forward to about a frontier Robin Hood- type hero. So many books, so very little time.

LeahBergen I'll be needing this one! Stacked. 8y

Thank you First to Read for this awesome book! I already have four people in mind to gift copies to once it comes out.
Pat Crowe: kidnapper, robber, fugitive, and (some would say) folk hero. One of the first to successfully kidnap a kid, get the ransom and escape made him pretty well known. This is a fictional account of his life- friends, loves and exploits. Five stars! My full review is on my blog: www.garabrandtreviews.wordpress.com
