Part one of an unusual and astonishing new fantasy trilogy that blends fine literary fare with a terrific romp through the reimagined outskirts of Victorian-era LondonIn the imaginary borough of Filching, the extensive Iremonger family (kings of mildew, moguls of mould) have made a fortune from junk, building a dark and sprawling mansion from salvage scrap. Heap House is surrounded by the dangerous, noxious, shifting Heaps that stretch beyond its bounds. And within its walls, certain objects begin to display strange signs of life.Young Clod Iremonger is about to be "trousered" and betrothed (unwillingly) to his cousin Pinalippy when he meets the plucky orphan servant Lucy Pennant, with whose help he begins to uncover the dark secrets of his familys empire. Mystery, romance and the perils of the Heaps await!Gorgeously (and ghoulishly) illustrated by the author, Heap House is peopled with unforgettable characters with delightfully skewed names--anxious, animal-loving Tummis with his pet seagull; menacing cousin Moorcus; dreadful Aunt Rosamud and more. As Carey writes, Every life is thick with rubbish, but the Iremongers did it with a difference.

Mehso-so

Man remember when people use to spend more time on here posting reviews of books… I wish it was like that still.

Anyways, this book was strange, the storyline is interesting a boy can hear objects talking and lives in a house surrounded by trash heaps. The writing style is frustrating to follow, it was really hard finding a good reading rhythm in this. The illustrations are creepy yet fun to look at.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I snagged this series at a library sale. Haven't read it yet, but I love seeing the covers on my shelves. 2y

Forgot to post my review last week. I was a little torn between Pick and So-So. I‘m going with pick because I found the plot to be interesting but instead of continuing on Audible I‘m going to switch to print.

#MarchIntoReading #JudgedByItsCover I saw a photo of this on someone's social media and immediately purchased it. I haven't read it yet as I was waiting not only for the trilogy to be complete, but for all 3 to be available in PB. #BookNerdProblems

StacksNShelves I have this to, but haven't read it either! 8y
scripturient Here they are already available in PB. But maybe that's the UK edition. 8y
scripturient And you just made me order the whole trilogy. My bank account does not thank you for that - but I do. 😉😜 8y

LeahBergen I thought this looked good, too! Can't wait to hear if you like it. 8y
AlaMich I was looking at the cover thinking, "I thought Edward Gorey had died but it says his name right there." Ah, Carey, not Gorey, but it's kind of weird how close they are, right? 8y

I love HEAP HOUSE, and the rest of the Iremonger trilogy so much!!!! Super original idea with dashes of Tim Burton-y fabulousness, and the illustrations are amazing. This is an illustration and a birth object (named 'Otto Clinchard') I received from Edward Carey. Simply amazing!

Jess This is fantastic. I love this series and think it is wonderful that you received a birth object from Carey. 9y
BookishBron Oooooh this is amazing! I read this series after you recommended it on all the books and loved it so so much! 9y

I read this last year after hearing @Liberty rave about it on @bookriot All the Books podcast. I LOVED it! Carey totally nailed the alternate POV - the characters' voices were so unusual and distinct from each other. And the illustrations at the start of each chapter were awesome!

Jan-Marie Liberty described it perfectly - "Tim Burton meets Downton Abbey" - sold!!? 9y
