Two people in exile. Two secrets. As the past tightens its grip, there may be no escape... TV presenter Allis Hagtorn leaves her partner and her job to take voluntary exile in a remote house on an isolated fjord. But her new job as housekeeper and gardener is not all that it seems, and her silent, surly employer, 44-year-old Sigurd Bagge, is not the old man she expected. As they await the return of his wife from her travels, their silent, uneasy encounters develop into a chilling, obsessive relationship, and it becomes clear that atonement for past sins may not be enough... Haunting, consuming and powerful, The Bird Tribunal is a taut, exquisitely written psychological thriller that builds to a shocking, dramatic crescendo that will leave you breathless.

Pickpick

This is a qualified pick for me. Ravatn paints an incredible picture of these two people living in gorgeous isolation next to a fjord. However, the pacing was a bit too slow for it to be as suspenseful as it could have been. Also—and I know this a minor quibble— but no quotation marks, no em dash, nothing at all to indicate lines of dialogue...there were moments of confusion.

saresmoore Hmm. I do love punctuation. 7y
Cathythoughts Yes I hear your concerns. I loved the atmosphere. The setting. There was a touch of Wuthering Heights for me. I‘m not a great critic , but I know I really enjoyed it. Sounds like you did too 👍🏻👍🏻pick 7y

This is the #planebook that will accompany me to San Francisco tomorrow. I‘m going to celebrate my dad‘s 80th birthday and it‘s where I grew up. Well, almost; I grew up just north of SF. It will be good to go home. And this book, a Norwegian thriller, will be my first foray into #nordicnoir #scandinaviannoir. 😀

But never fear, I am also taking my Fire, which is stocked with plenty more books.

Mdargusch Have fun! 7y

saresmoore Safe travels! I‘m looking forward to your review because I didn‘t know Scandinavian noir was a thing, but I think I love it already. 7y
AlaMich @saresmoore Thanks! Yes, like Jo Nesbø, Karin Fossum, Arnaldur Indridason (yes, I have been doing a little research on this ?). Or they call it Nordic noir. 7y

A beautifully written and translated thriller set in Norway. This was such a tense book, full of atmosphere and menace, perfect for lovers of psychological thrillers. Thanks so much to TripFiction for my paperback copy.

Information and trust are scarce in this taut story. We are given brief snippets of information, veiled and uncertain. The creeping atmosphere of distrust builds, between Aliss and Sigurd and between the reader and characters as they edit and revise their own stories. Ravatn uses every tool her isolated environment and her damaged characters provide and there are shades of du Maurier and Hitchcock in the slow, disconcerting unravelling of her tale

Moray_Reads Thanks to @tricours for this one, it really pushed me out of my comfort zone. In a good way! 8y

Where to start with this book. As you read you are slowly consumed by the story. The pace is perfect you eagerly yearn for more. It takes over your mind the characters make you nervous you have no idea who to trust. As you sink deeper and deeper you can smell your surroundings and read on the each of your seat. The Norwegian tone is refreshing it's a new style I haven't read before. This books brings something meaty and juicy to the book table!

It may have just been that I wasn't in the best frame-of-mind for The Bird Tribunal, but I can only rate it so-so. The main characters were both a little annoying. The book not as "thriller" as I was hoping for. ***After a few days, I'm liking this book better. I keep thinking about it, so I upped my rating!

This book is on the short side but it sure packs one hell of a punch. The ending left me with a sense of peace that I didn‘t even realize I was craving. I don‘t recall ever being quite so absorbed by a book before and I believe this is due to never being sure what would happen. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys dark settings, fascinating characters with secrets, and writing that enraptures you and transports you to a chilling location.
