Three Scenarios in Which Hana Sasaki Grows a Tail
Three Scenarios in Which Hana Sasaki Grows a Tail: Stories | Kelly Luce
12 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Fiction. Set in Japan, Luce's playful, tender storiesreminiscent of Haruki Murakami and Aimee Bendertip into the fantastical, plumb the power of memory, and measure the human capacity to love. The award-winning narratives in this mesmerizing debut trace the lives of ex-pats, artists, and outsiders as they seek to find their place in the world. HANA SASAKI beguiles and surprises: stories include an oracular toaster, a woman who grows a tail, and a most unusual kind of sex reassignment.

I know I have an unpopular opinion on this one, but I just didn‘t really care for any of the stories in this collection. I had a hard time connecting with them and I thought they were a bit too out there for me. I like weird, but I just felt unsatisfied at the end of each one. It felt like they were just so abrupt and it was hard to really get a full opinion.

December 9: Parade for the Dead and Dying by Kelly Luce. Story published in the Austin Review.

Palmsville is having a parade for the Dead and Dying, but a flatbed driver doesn‘t do as planned, and we get the story about the driver and why he did as he did.

AnneCecilie No 9 was the #DoubleSpin number for December so that means that this line @TheAromaofBooks 4y

My purchases from Malvern Books in Austin Texas. Today they are donating all sales to Planned Parenthood because they rock! I ❤it when buying books=helping my fellow woman! #resist #strongertogether

Suzze I wanted to place a mail order from them, but it looks like they sell through someone else? I wasn't sure. I hope my one friend in Austin (who is a big reader) went. 8y
beckygracelea Cartwheel is fascinating. Still find that it pops into my head unexpectedly a lot. 8y

This collection of #shortstories could double as my #diversereads and it is a debut (although not a #debutnovel). I'm about halfway through in a year because I lost it in a move and almost gave up looking. So glad I found it. Luce writes imaginatively and charmingly without once sacrificing skill and style. The ten stories delight and enchant beginning with the first entry wherein the narrator relates the story of a prophetic toaster. #booktober +

RealLifeReading Oh! I've seen this before somewhere (maybe from @Liberty or @OutlandishLit ) And really wanted to read it. Thanks for the reminder. 8y

I'm reintroducing myself to #shortstories as I've never been much of a fan but feel that I am missing out on something great.
I often feel they are unfinished. Like the author decided halfway through a novel they didn't want to finish and said "meh, it's a short story now." This collection is my favorite so far! Rooey being number one amongst them. A good place to start if you want to dip your toes in the short story pond.
