What a hard book to review. Almost fable-like, it describes a black savior trying to protect his people from the invading white people. It‘s beautiful in its telling. Conversely, it praises female circumcision as an important rite signifying the tribe‘s independence from the “evil” Christians. At once I want to love and hate this book. It was written by a Kenyan man in the early 1960s before circumcision was decried for its brutality. ⬇️

Texreader But the author was considered a “progressive.” Ha! I think he portrayed the gross outcome of the practice in the story but I can‘t get past this statement supporting its continuation: “Circumcision of women was not important as a physical operation. It was what it did inside a person. It could not be stopped overnight. Patience and, above all, education, were needed.” I still give the book a pick; it‘s an authentic viewpoint told well even if ⬇️ (edited) 2y
Texreader I find parts of it despicable. #Kenya #readingafrica2022 2y

BarbaraBB Very thoughtful review! 2y
Texreader @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB Thank you. Very hard review to write. I truly want to respect a native people‘s customs and beliefs but I have to draw the line at female circumcision, especially coming from a man who cannot know the horror and harm it does to the poor girls. (edited) 2y

The author is a man writing in the early 1960s who appears to be defending the tribal way of life against the evil Christians who tried to forbid female circumcision. I‘m hoping it takes a different direction but I‘m worried that this is an attempt to glorify gruesome misogynistic tribal customs. #Kenya #readingafrica2022 @Librarybelle @Butterfinger

Two communities live on the shores of a river in Africa; one has adhered to christianity, while the other still abides by the old traditions and rituals but has embraced school and education, both hoping that their way is the one which will provide for a better faith and life in general. While their conflict grows deeper, an innocent young couple of lovers, who try to reconcile the visions, falls victim to this rift of doubt and hate.

Waiyaki raised in the people‘s culture and also at the mission gains renown as a teacher. But his dream to unite his people through education blinds him to growing hatred. And then he falls in love with the wrong woman. Each scene shows an aspect of the cultural conflict, building tension until the dramatic climax. It does not wrap up loose ends or leave one comfortable. Although the conclusion is forewarned, one hopes disaster will be averted.

Liz_M Photo chosen because I attended an event featuring Ngũgĩ wa Thiong‘o, Joyce Carol Oates, and Martin Amis and afterwords had him sign a copy of this novel. 😍 4y

#BKBF book haul! 😁 😁 😁

The two volume dark nyrb book will be released in Oct. My Struggle was on sale, but I couldn't carry five volumes of it, due to weight of said nyrb book.

This week we read our first book from the continent of Africa and took a hard look at the way imperialism changed so many lives and still effects us today. #1001books #bookpodcast #applepodcasts #googleplay #soundcloud

They came to a place where their ways parted. they stopped there and stood as if held together by something outside themselves. perhaps it was the magic of the moon that held them rooted to the spot.

Read the first few pages of this a few weeks back when I was looking for a book for another reading challenge. Didn't fit the challenge, but captured my interest so much that this was moved to the top of the TBR pile as my most anticipated read!
