Sunday's on the Phone to Monday
Sunday's on the Phone to Monday: A Novel | Christine Reilly
29 posts | 18 read | 69 to read
The Middlesteins meets The Virgin Suicides in this arresting family love story about the eccentric yet tightknit Simone family, coping with tragedy during 90s New York, struggling to reconnect with each other and heal.Claudio and Mathilde Simone, once romantic bohemians hopelessly enamored with each other, find themselves nestled in domesticity in New York, running a struggling vinyl record store and parenting three daughters as best they can: Natasha, an overachieving prodigy; sensitive Lucy, with her debilitating heart condition; and Carly, adopted from China and quietly fixated on her true origins. With prose that is as keen and illuminating as it is whimsical and luminous, debut novelist Christine Reilly tells the unusual love story of this family. Poignant and humane, Sundays on the Phone to Monday is a deft exploration of the tender ties that bind families together, even as they threaten to tear them apart.

7-26-23: My 76th finished book of 2023! A lovely book about family, the ups and downs, love and death, mental health and wellness. Mathilde and Claudio meet in their 20s and create a wonderful life for themselves including their 3 daughters. They are tested numerous times but because of their bond they weather even the hardest storms with grace. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣7️⃣6️⃣

GidgetsTreasures75 And I loved all the musical references, even the title is a line from a Beatles record. 🎼 1y

Bostonmomx2 Is this good? I returned it to the library unread, wondering if I should get it again. 8y
BittersweetBooks @Bostonmomx2 I thought it was just okay. I kept wondering where the story was going the whole time...I only gave it 2 stars on Goodreads. 8y

You guys, I really am trying with this book. I am. It takes all the force inside of me to not bail. Mostly because I'm halfway through it which is not much considering its lengthy.

Bookworm-Bobbie I always say never finish a book just because you started it. Just think of all the other wonderful books you could be reading! 8y
Notafraidofwords @Bookworm-Bobbie I know. That's the problem. I'm not connecting with this one and wish to be reading other things. 8y
JessReads No shame in bailing! 8y

Jenshootsweddings Life is too short to spend on books you don't like! I used to force myself through too but this year I am all about shamelessly bailing on something that isn't capturing me. 8y
Bookworm-Bobbie @Notafraidofwords I would bail, if it's not working you might resent spending so much effort on it. 8y
Notafraidofwords @JessReads @Jenshootsweddings I bailed. I couldn't do It. 8y
JessReads Yessssss! Now go read something awesome 8y
Megabooks Well, you're making me feel better that my library doesn't have it as a Kindle file. I'm glad you bailed. Don't force yourself! 8y
Notafraidofwords @Ebooksandcooks not all of it was bad, but I kept asking why do I care about these people? 8y
Megabooks I've done that before! Sometimes it's worse to not care than dislike. 8y

"How did people work? How could so many people find the strength of full-time jobs? To have cubicles and their own phone numbers and the scariest kind of success..." I know Jane, I know. I ask myself this question all the time and I have a full-time job where I commute 45 minutes to M-F where I'm an associate with a to do list.

LauraBeth 😂😂 😂 8y
Megabooks Yup! 8y

Hmm. I'm not sure how to feel about this one yet (50 pages in). This seems to be the result of Fates and Furies having a baby with Everything I Never Told You So. I can either love love love or hate. Why is choosing your next book so hard, ugh?

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Really?!? Hmmm I liked Everything I Never Told You but definitely not Fates and Furies. But, I do have this one down as to read! So definitely interested in hearing what you think of it! 🙂 8y
Notafraidofwords @Penny_LiteraryHoarders so far I like it, but I am not sure about the writing style. 8y

4/5 Stars. This depicts family dynamics and relationships through writing that almost feels like poetic verse. I had a sense of nostalgia the entire time I was reading this. The beginning didn't quite grab me, but I did eventually fall into a rhythm with this one.

MrBook A great picture! 8y

While it dragged a little at times, I really enjoyed this intimate portrait of a loving family. Reilly really invites us into her characters' minds and she doesn't over-simplify them the way some authors do. Recommend.

This book is chock full of astute little gems that really capture the psychological reality of feelings like love and death.

tricours How do you blur everything but a few lines? Is that a new feature? 8y
Orbeck33 @tricours No, not new. When you are in the Litsy photo editor you can scroll across the bottom for different options. One is "blur". You choose that and manually blur the parts you want blurred. 8y

Here are my June reading statistics. I forgot to mention that I've bought 6 books, none of which are included in what I've read. It's an illness!

Reviewsbylola Haha, I totally understand the book buying problem. I have purchased 13 new books in the past two weeks. 😁 8y
sherrynuts I need to stop going to thrift stores. I always find books for around $1 and then I can't say no to them! 8y

LitHousewife @sherrynuts Your thrift stores must have good stuff. I don't go often, but I've never found any gems. 😔 8y
sherrynuts @LitHousewife there are a lot of thrift stores in my area. Goodwill never has much, but for some reason I always walk out with at least one from the others in my area. 8y

I originally would not have picked this one up. It was a total case of judgement. I assumed it was some romantic love story.......those I am not of fan of. This book however is a book about family and a love of a family. It really is a must read.

I had to change pillows after I finished this because of the tears. Beautiful.

the_need_to_read It was so much better and different than I thought it would be. Jane broke my heart. 8y
LitHousewife @the-need-to-read There were sections of Jane's story that made me so angry. I wanted to kill her "boyfriend." 8y
the_need_to_read Me too! And her attempting to kill herself to save Lucy was gut wrenching! My stomach was in knots after that. 8y
LitHousewife @the-need-to-read That is what made me soak my pillow. Had Lucy gotten her heart I would have been pissed, but the way that played out ripped out my heart, too. 8y
the_need_to_read Exactly! I liked that the ending was realistic and not tied up in a pretty little bow. For me I felt like Jane and Lucy made the book. 8y

"...to call her at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services in Grand Rapids."

I rode my bike past Pine Rest to go to the library hundreds of times during my youth. While I've never been on the campus, I know exactly where Jane is in this story. I was not expecting this brush with real life.

Jenshootsweddings I love when you randomly find books with places you're connected to IRL! 9y
Megabooks Yes, that is interesting. I picked up a random book and it was set in my small Kentucky hometown. If you read enough books, it's bound to happen. 😃 9y

The sleeve is off. Let's start reading!

HarperPerennial Ahhhh like the book version of rolling up your sleeves! 9y
LitHousewife @HarperPerennial Exactly! I never read a hardcover with the sleeves on. I'm okay with beating up the book itself a little while reading, but sleeves are sacred. 😊 9y
BookishFeminist @LitHousewife I do the same thing! Plus the sleeve gets annoying bc it moves around whenever you shift while reading. 9y

Donna_sBookMinute Sometimes I leave the cover and sometimes I remove. Not sure what it depends on. I'm using the flap as a placeholder with my current read. And some boards reveal beautiful surprises when you remove the covers. If I'm going to reshelve a book with an attractive spine I'll leave it bare. 9y

Small vignettes for chapters, showing how life is made up of small but significant non related events. This is the, sometimes sad story of Claudio and Mathilde (Fates and Furies might have ruined that name for me) and their families. The way this was told, reminded me of Dept of Speculation.
