The Railwayman's Wife
The Railwayman's Wife | Ashley Hay
In a small town on the land's edge, in the strange space at a war's end, a widow, a poet and a doctor each try to find their own peace, and their own new story. In Thirroul, in 1948, people chase their dreams through the books in the railway's library. Anikka Lachlan searches for solace after her life is destroyed by a single random act. Roy McKinnon, who found poetry in the mess of war, has lost his words and his hope. Frank Draper is trapped by the guilt of those his treatment and care failed on their first day of freedom. All three struggle with the same question: how now to be alive.

HISTORICAL FICTION - AUSTRALIA - ROMANCE

THE RAILWAYMAN'S WIFE is a book women's fiction fans won't want to miss.

Even though the ending was sad, it was a very positive read about healing, hope, and everyday issues.

It is filled with love, loss, and thoughts to ponder.

This was so much better than I'd anticipated! Not the saccharine sweet tale id thought (phew!) But an inspiring and beautifully written story.

Crazeedi Adding! 3y
Tamra Oh, I have not stacked thus far because I figured it would be too sappy - thanks for clarifying. 3y

Freebie from a neighbour.
I like that its Australian and set in 1940's, so far it reads easily.

A husband that loved best by striving to be what his wife wants instead of what he truly is, dies suddenly in a tragic accident. A grieving wife needs to work by the rumbling trains that took him from her. A lonely child and an even lonlier soldier poet find joy in simple pleasures. A poem written to a woman that two men love in very different ways. The author delivers a quiet story filled with loss, heartache and slowly unfolding hope. 3🌟

I have had this audiobook on my tbr for a couple of years, mainly because my favorite narrator (Mr. West) is one of the readers, and I require periodic fixes, but also because it‘s historical fiction that appealed to me.

I‘m glad I listened to it: a slow, sad story about characters dealing with grief and coping after WWII. Really pretty writing, but I wish there was a little more development, and the ending sort of fell flat for me.

#TBRtemptation post! Historical fiction set in post-WWII Australia. When Anikka's husband is killed in a railway accident, she's given a job at the Railway Institute's library. There's Ross, the poet with writer's block & pessimism. And there's Dr. Frank, heavy with guilt over failed medical aid he's provided. Their friendship explores love and beginnings & endings in all their various forms. Sounds good to me! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

SharonGoforth I loved this book ❤️ 8y

3.5 stars A kind of quiet read. A story about loss, moving forward, the guilt one may feel about moving forward and possibly forgetting. While these themes centre on Ani Lachlan, the other 2 characters Roy and Frank are going through the same. Reminded me of Itani's novel, Tell.

An interesting examination of grief and loss and how we cope with them but as a story it fell flat, the characters detached.

Brona I loved this book a lot. It was one of my 2014 favourite reads. Sorry you didn't feel the same way... 9y
