3 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
FROM THE AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF BETTER THE BLOOD COMES ANOTHER CASE FOR NEW ZEALAND'S BEST INVESTIGATOR, HANA WESTERMAN. Another cracking, page-turning journey into another culture VAL McDERMID Two murders. Two decades apart. One chance to get justice. Hana Westerman has left Auckland and her career as a detective behind her. Settled in a quiet coastal town, all she wants is a fresh start. The discovery of a skeleton in the dunes near her house changes everything. The remains are those of a young M?ori woman who went missing four years before, and Hana has a connection to the case. Twenty years ago, a schoolfriend of hers was found buried in the exact same spot. Her killer died in prison, but did the police get the wrong man? And if he was innocent, then why did he plead guilty? No longer part of the Criminal Investigation Branch, Hana turns to her ex-husband Jaye, a high-flying Detective Inspector, for help. But when he cuts her out of the investigation, she realises that she will have to find the answers she needs on her own. But in digging deeper, she sets herself on a potentially fatal collision course with a killer. Hana Westerman was a fascinating character in Better The Blood. We get to know her better in this 2nd in the series, but more importantly, we get to know her family and friends better. I loved experiencing life and the crime through the eyes of daughter, Addison and her partner, PLUS 1. Hana‘s father, Eru and her former police colleagues add depth. Getting to know one of the victims, as an after-death voice is brilliant. A great read!

I‘m always nervous about a sequel to a book I‘ve loved, but this is just as good as the first in the series. A convincing balance of characterisation of core characters, and compelling, propulsive episodic plot. The real strength of this series is the strong sense of place which is established without detracting from the experience of reading a well-plotted crime novel. Hoping there are more to come.

Book 2 of the Hana Westerman series finds the remains of a 4 years missing high risk Māori teen discovered on the dunes of Hana‘s hometown Tata Bay. I found this book just as satisfying as book 1 and hope to see more. These books are really steeped in Māori culture and I love that. That don‘t strictly have to be read in order, but I think they‘re better if they are.

And that‘s a wrap on #ReadingOceania2024 #NewZealand

Librarybelle Yay! Congratulations on completing the challenge! And, I will have to check out the series. 4mo
