The Situation Room
The Situation Room: The Inside Story of Presidents in Crisis | George Stephanopoulos
13 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
George Stephanopoulos, the legendary political news host and former advisor to President Clinton, recounts the history-making crises from the place where twelve presidents made their highest-pressure decisions: the White House Situation Room. No room better defines American power and its role in the world than the White House Situation Room. And yet, none is more shrouded in secrecy and mystery. Created under President Kennedy, the Sit Room has been the epicenter of crisis management for presidents for more than six decades. Time and again, the decisions made within the Sit Room complex affect the lives of every person on this planet. Detailing close calls made and disasters narrowly averted, THE SITUATION ROOM will take readers through dramatic turning points in a dozen presidential administrations, including: Incredible minute-by-minute transcripts from the Sit Room after both Presidents Kennedy and Reagan were shot The shocking moment when Henry Kissinger raised the military alert level to DEFCON III while President Nixon was drunk in the White House residence The extraordinary scene when President Carter asked for help from secret government psychics to rescue American hostages in Iran A vivid retelling of the harrowing hours during the 9/11 attack New details from Obama administration officials leading up to the raid on Osama Bin Laden And a first-ever account of January 6th from the staff inside the Sit Room THE SITUATION ROOM is the definitive, past-the-security-clearance look at the room where it happened, and the peoplethe famous and those you've never heard ofwho have made history within its walls.

Fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the White House Situation Room as it has evolved over the years and throughout the presidential administrations from Kennedy until Biden. If you are still unsure about how to vote on Nov. 5, read the Trump chapter. It will enrage, disturb, horrify and scare the #%^ out of you.

JenReadsAlot I loved that book! 6d

94/150 I always enjoy behind the scene books, especially when it's about the inner workings of the government. Starting with Kennedy, Stephanopoulos chronicles how the Situation Room has dealt with various crises, how the room evolved and changed with technological advances, and how each president, from Kennedy to Biden, interacted with the staff who worked there. Keeping the viewpoint of the staff members kept the book unusually apolitical ⬇️

RamsFan1963 which I appreciated. The staff said time again, they serve the presidency not a particular president. I found the chapter on Donald Trump as disturbing and bewildered as I expected. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 94th book finished for #Readaway2024 @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES @Andrew65 2mo

I didn‘t initially think I‘d read this, but I‘m so glad I did. Starting with when it was created under Kennedy, the book looks at how each administration has used the situation room and different crises that have been managed there. It‘s absolutely fascinating and focuses on the people who work in the room, which I love.

Great insight into our leadership and how each of them have - mostly- kept us out of trouble.

“Dawn had not yet broken when Mike Stieglitz steered his blue Toyota Camry toward the White House on January 6, 2021.” A little something different in between the summer beachy reads. #FirstLineFridays

Interesting to hear again about the many crises that occurred over the years. Equally interesting to read about how the different presidents handled those many crises.

I loved this book, which gives an inside look at the White House Situation Room. Each chapter focuses on a president, beginning with Kennedy who was president when the room was established. I read and listened to this one. The audiobook includes actual audio from recordings made at the time and also excerpts from interviews done for the book. Well researched and interesting!

Librarybelle I loved this one too! I‘ve recommended it to a few people already. Cool to hear about the audio! 4mo
MallenNC @Librarybelle Glad you liked it too! I have been recommending it even before I finished it. George reads the audiobook and the supplementary audio highlights are great. 4mo
JenReadsAlot I'm going to have to get the audio book now too! 4mo

Wow! Stephanopoulos takes the reader through six decades of presidential history through the confines of the Situation Room. This is a fascinating look at the workings of each president from Kennedy through Biden, the apolitical staffers who interact with them, & the administration staffers. At times poignant and other times horrifying, I learned a lot, and it also confirmed some of my impressions on former presidents. 5 stars!

JenReadsAlot I'm a huge fan of George so looking forward to this one! 5mo

I love presidential history, no matter the political party, and have been collecting signed presidential biographies for years. I find the thought processes and decision making skills of the most powerful people in the world fascinating and this book made me feel like I had a front row seat to those moments. I loved how Stephanopoulos crafted the story of the POTUS right alongside the staffers who kept this nerve center running 24/7.
