•Between the excellent writing and the excellent narration (performed by Julia Whelan), this was actually pretty good. It wasn‘t thrilling by any means, but it does have a bit of mystery to it. This is perfect for when you're overwhelmed by overly convoluted plot twists and just want something more grounded.
pickI think maybe why people don‘t like this one as much as The Last Thing He Told Me is a difference in pace, as Last Thing is more of a thriller. This one is more of a mystery, slower paced , with essentially distant half siblings trying to figure out if their father fell to his death or was pushed . Old family secrets, and the authors great details of coastal CA. NYC, and upstate NY made for an enjoyable read . I didn‘t guess the twist!
I‘m only about 50 pages in , trying to take a break from some of the depressing non fiction I‘m reading. Not abandoning any but sometimes need a break!
pickThis book was good- I liked most of the characters, eapecially Sam. But it didn't ?wow me in any way.
It wasn't a cozy thriller, obviously, but it certainly wasn't a "sit on the edge of your seat" thriller. This is one of those books that is just in the wrong genre. Maybe more of a drama?

so-soThis was just ok for me. Half siblings reunite to figure out if their father‘s death was truly an accident as the police claim. With a little mystery mixed in, I felt like this was more of a family drama focused on dysfunctional relationships between themselves and their romantic relationships as well. The story held enough appeal to finish but took me 2 weeks to finish which is rare for me.
pickThis was a quick and enjoyable read. I liked the unusual family dynamics and so was willing to suspend my belief in all these relationships remaining in tact. I liked the characters and their personal motivations/ journeys. I'm happy to hear it will get adapted, and for bonus content, I discovered a new artist, Noah Kahan, from her acknowledgments.
so-soI loved THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME, so I went into this with my hopes too high. It fell flat for me as distant half-siblings try to learn the truth about their father‘s unexpected death. While the plot holds some surprises, I never felt invested in the relationships described & by the end, it all felt too implausible. Maybe had I connected with any of the characters, it would‘ve been more fun to read— though I‘m sure it would be fun to discuss.
so-soThis was more of a family drama than a mystery and it definitely wasn‘t a thriller. I was curious enough about what happened to the father but a lot of this wasn‘t compelling. I did not understand the motivations of the father character and his primary relationship, which took away some of my enjoyment. I did care enough to finish though! This didn‘t fit well with my other December reads but I had to take it when my library hold came in!
pickRead this in one day. A fast moving story about a brother and sister who are convinced their father was murdered, not suicide as the police have determined. Big twist! Interesting characters too.
pickThis is a gentle mystery, and not really about the mystery, so much, and more about the characters and their relationships. Family, death, love, loyalty, secrets, identity, inheritance, self discovery. This is a fast read and you won‘t want to put it down. If you liked the author‘s book The Last Thing He Told Me, you‘ll like this one even better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
so-soMore of a very sad love story than a thriller. I enjoyed it most of the time - but it was a bit boring in parks and the name of Liam‘s love felt like a bit of a tortured trick.

I can't believe this is my first Laura Dave book. It certainly won't be my last. This book was SO GOOD. From the very start to the tearful ending I was hooked.
This is a love story and a mystery. It's about the love between Liam and Cory. They met in school. Liam's cousin Joe introduced them. In a way.
Such a beautiful and sad story.

pickI really enjoyed how this family drama/mystery played out. When As I finished this I realized I never spent a minute of my reading trying to determine how the mystery would resolve. I was just a fly on the wall reading as Nora and Sam discovered the life of the man who was their father.
Dad would never commit suicide.
He was young, healthy, happy, and successful.
We have to find out if someone was with him the night he slipped and fell to his death on the rocks that he could walk over in his sleep.
