The Paris Gown: A Novel | Christine Wells
6 posts | 2 read
From perennially popular historical novelist Christine Wells, the delightful tale of three young women in 1950s Paris who share a single dazzling Christian Dior gown. Paris, 1955 Three friends--Claire, Gina, and Margot--who parted as very young women with their whole lives ahead of them, reunite in Paris years later, determined to start life anew. Parisian Claire has been working hard to become a Michelin-starred chef one day, but ever since the heady time she spent in the company of socialites Gina and Margot, her dream has been to own a Dior gown. This seemed like a far-off fantasy, until her neighbor, Deidre Martin, who lives above Claire's family brasserie, mysteriously disappears from Paris, quitting her job at the United States Embassy and leaving Claire to mind her apartment. Most bafflingly, Deidre also makes Claire a very special gift: a stunning Dior gown. Meanwhile Gina, a cool American blue blood, lands on Claire's doorstep nursing a broken heart and a broken engagement after her father lost all of the family money in a risky business venture. A journalist aspiring to be a novelist, Gina has returned to Paris in the hopes of pursuing her dream. But when Deidre goes missing, Gina's journalistic instincts scent a story, and an invitation to the United States Embassy ball is too great an opportunity to miss. Only what on earth is she going to wear? Warm-hearted Claire insists Gina wear the Dior gown to the ball, and after some hesitation, Gina accepts. At Dior for Gina's fitting, whom should assist them but Margot, the friend they thought had gone back to Australia to be married. But Margot is living in Paris and working at Dior under an assumed name, and clearly is not happy to have been found. Is their close friendship at an end? Or will the wonder and delight of the Dior gown bring these young women back together? Gorgeous, perfectly fitted, lustrous and luxurious, the Dior gown has the power to change lives--as these three remarkable women are about to discover...

4.5⭐

The Paris Gown is about 3 friends in Paris all with different backgrounds. Gina is an American that has been given an easy life. She's a journalist and aspires to be an author of great books. Margot is an Australian that has been raised to be a socialites wife. Claire is French and aspires to be a chef in a three star Michelin restaurant. She grew up in her families cafe cooking. ⬇️

After a few years apart, they find theirselves all in France, again. Gina's dad lost everything, she can't marry the man she loves now, so she runs to Paris and to Claire. Claire is now the chef of her family restaurant, but she doesn't know for how long. Margot ran to Paris to hide from someone. She can't let Claire or Gina know she's there. A gown left to Claire will bring them all back together.

I don't usually read romance novels, but this one was excellent! It has the 1950's, Paris streets, French food, a haute couture gown and most importantly friendship. I enjoyed getting to know each character. I liked the way Wells developed the characters. She made them real and their problems they had to face are things people face everyday. I could tell she cared for each character.
I would have liked there to be a little more about the men, but that might have taken away from the book and the main characters. I will tell you that this is written in 3 POV's. Though there is romance it's soft and nothing bad, I think that's another reason I enjoyed it. I don't care for a graphic romance novel and this was far from it. Just a sweet little romance thrown in to the mix.

This charming story explored fashion, food, and true friendship. Paris in the 1950‘s is the idyllic place for three friends to launch their new lives after attending a cookery school that was intended to prepare them for marriage.

Claire, Gina, & Margot are soon living contrasting lives around the world while trying to keep in touch. They get back together by choice and chance.

Princess-Kingofkings Although their education didn‘t seem to prepare them for life outside of marriage, their true friendship is what carries them thru struggles, disagreements, and ultimately encourages them to live life lavishly.

Their friendship, how they remembered it and maintained it was my favorite part. It was clear that they made choices to preserve and grow their bond.

Princess-Kingofkings I would have enjoyed reading a bit more about the relationships with the men in their lives but then that may have distracted from the women‘s friendship. Instead, I was able to develop a bit of history using what was shared.

Historical Fiction lovers will get a taste of Dior fashion from the gorgeous descriptions of dresses. Foodies will be able to almost taste the meals and wine shared among friends.
