Hera
Hera | Jennifer Saint
8 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
Hera, immortal goddess and daughter of the ancient Titan Cronos, helped her brother Zeus to overthrow their tyrannical father so that they could rule the world. But, as they establish their reign on Mount Olympus, Hera suspects that Zeus might be just as ruthless and cruel as their father was, and she begins to question her role at his side. She was born to rule, but does that mean perpetuating a cycle of violence and cruelty that has existed since the dawn of time? Will assuming her power mean that Hera loses herself, or can she find a way to forge a better world?
Traditionally portrayed as a jealous wife, a wicked stepmother, and a victim-blaming instrument of the patriarchy, Hera is ripe for a retelling that shows her as a powerful queen―ruthless when she needs to be, but also compassionate, strategic, and ambitious. With Hera, beloved and bestselling author Jennifer Saint delivers another epic and enthralling reimagining of a Greek heroine we only thought we knew.

Mehso-so

Saint allows the reader to see Hera in a different light. There seemed to be too many events packed in, taking opportunities to better understand Hera away. Saint does a great job painting pictures of the settings and many of the events; I could really see, with great detail, what was happening. The audiobook was hit-or-miss. I also felt as though Fredrick was too monotoned and even paced in her delivery of the material, even the eventful parts.

This book read like a pissed off roll call of Zeus‘ descendants (4 of whom descend from Hera, as well), but I enjoyed it. Years ago as a Math/CS major at a liberal arts college, ‘free‘ credits found the way to two particular instructors in the English Dept - one of whom was a master storyteller allowing me into her upper level mythology course - without doubt my favorite 3 credits in those 4 years. This book tested my memory in a great way.

I really enjoy Saint‘s Greek mythology retellings! This time, she writes from Hera‘s perspective. Often coming across as the villain, Saint rounds her out here and makes her motivations as more than simple jealousy. Including many of my favorite stories, I enjoyed the narrator‘s performance and this fresh take on these familiar tales! I can‘t wait to see what Saint will write next!! #AudioColoring
