I am DNFing at about 50% but not marking it as a bail. It is totally me, not the book. The writing is good, the short chapters make it an easy, fast read. I can easily see why it‘s on the #WomensPrize longlist. The mental health cycle it deals with is hard and I am avoiding picking it back up. Time to call it.

squirrelbrain I didn‘t love this either, although I think others did. I too found the unremitting grimness hard, and it didn‘t get any better, so you‘re right to bail. 7mo
BarbaraBB I loved it but it is very hard indeed and heartbreaking. I can see why you put it aside 7mo
Deblovestoread @squirrelbrain Thanks for letting me know it doesn‘t get better. It helps to know I made the right decision. 😊 7mo

#Bookmail! After not acquiring any physical books for two full months (two! Maybe two and a half, really!), these arrived today, ordered from the UK for my Women‘s Prize for fiction reading. They don‘t have US pub dates, so I figured this my only way of completing the list. I‘ve read 8 so far and am sputtering a bit on my 9th read, which is feeling more and more like a bail.

squirrelbrain Which one are you thinking of bailing on? 8mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain The same one you bailed on! Blue, Beautiful World. I like the writing but not so much the story. Or maybe it‘s stories, that isn‘t really clear. I would hope it all comes together at the end but I‘m not sure I‘m invested enough to get there. I‘m halfway through and will try to read at least one more chapter, but we‘ll see. 8mo
squirrelbrain Ooh, I feel extra-brave for bailing now, if you‘re still powering through… 🤣 8mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain Well, I do like sci-fi and I don‘t think you do so much, so it‘s a bit more angled toward my preferences already. But I‘m bewildered by its inclusion on this list. It makes me wonder if it has one vocal advocate on the judging panel. It has a low star rating on Goodreads. 8mo

How am I the first to post about this book while it‘s on the #WomenPrize longlist??
Anyhow, it deserves to be there. It‘s a powerful read. Cilla leaves her homeland Grenada to make money in the UK. She leaves her son Raef behind and it takes 7 years before she can afford his ticket and for him to reunite with his family. Things don‘t go well however and Cilla blames herself. Told by mother and son alternately the book packs a punch.

squirrelbrain Oops, must have forgotten to post when I read it! 🤪 It sounds like you liked it better than me - I felt it was a bit long in places. 8mo
Leniverse It's the cover. It's putting everyone off 🤪😆 8mo

BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain It‘s long indeed but it felt like a fast paced one to me. 8mo
BarbaraBB @Leniverse That is absolutely true!! I dreaded reading it too! Don‘t let it put you off though! 8mo
Leniverse It's one of only three longlist books that I haven't been able to get through the libraries or on a kindle deal, so I've been leaving them for last in case an offer turns up. But of the three I feel the least drawn to this one so I'm glad to hear you liked it! 8mo
Gissy Great! It‘s in my Amazon shopping cart. I will order it then today🤗I‘m buying them online because I only found one book from the list in one of my local bookstores and I don‘t like to read digital 🤷🏽‍♀️ 8mo
BarbaraBB @Gissy Me neither! I buy them online or get them in the library. Sometimes I do audio but I prefer holding a real book in my hands 🥰 8mo
sarahbarnes Very good to know you liked this one! 8mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I have it waiting! I had to buy it so I am racing through my library loans and some of the shorter ones first. So glad to hear that you liked it and found it worthy. 8mo
