Cheri and The Last of Cheri
Cheri and The Last of Cheri | Colette, Roger Senhouse
9 posts | 13 read | 10 to read
Two volumes of Colette's most beloved works, with a new Introduction by Judith Thurman. Chri, together with The Last of Chri, is a classic story of a love affair between a very young man and a charming older woman. The amour between Fred Peloux, the beautiful gigolo known as Chri, and the courtesan La de Lonval tenderly depicts the devotion that stems from desire, and is an honest account of the most human preoccupations of youth and middle age. With compassionate insight Colette paints a full-length double portrait using an impressionistic style all her own.

Collette is a tremendous writer; her descriptions - of a room's layout, of how the sunlight falls upon a street at a particular time of day, of characters' dress, of flowers, of color, of emotions...anything really - are second to none, the perfect counter-argument to those who counsel writers to eschew adjectives and keep their prose spare. This must have been a bear to translate into English, and I'm not surprised that the introduction claims 👇

The_Penniless_Author ...that this is the first time it's been done correctly. As snobbish and superior as the characters can seem at times, the overarching theme - reckoning with the passage of time - is universal and lends them a sympathetic air that makes them relatable all the same. 2y

#BonjourMadame #SeptemberDanes I am very fond of the tagged book,I guess Gigi would be her most famous since it was turned into a play then a movie.I love this old collection of short stories I found , haven‘t read them all yet.She was nominated for the Nobel prize in Literature in 1948.And she was exquisitely French.

LeahBergen Ah, Colette! ❤️❤️ 6y

Reading Colette is pure joy. Her writing flows, it is sensual, intimate, tactile, creates a decadent, languid, sexual atmosphere, full of smells, images, sensations. She is a free spirit, her women are independent, fully sexual, not afraid of keeping beautiful boys half their age as sex objects; yet make and invest their own money. The story is really not important - I could just get lost in the flow of her sentences. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⬇️

LeahBergen I love these two books. ❤️❤️ 7y
Clare-Dragonfly Wow, I haven't read any Colette, but now I think I ought to! 7y
Gezemice @Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t think she is for everyone, but if you love readable classics and don‘t mind relative plotlessness, she might be for you. 7y
Gezemice @LeahBergen I got them from the library but I think I will buy my own copy. If I can find one... I had to get an interlibrary loan and it is from 1953... 7y

It‘s Colette‘s Birthday (1873-1954) some of these are still on my TBR.Always thought the Farrar,Straus, and Giroux paperback design on these editions was wonderful. And so far my favorites of hers are “Cheri “ and “Last of Cheri.”

dsfisher My Colette collection did not make it through numerous moves. I loved her, I am going to have to look for her books 7y
Leftcoastzen @dsfisher I think it‘s so hard for book lovers to move , we always have to downsize the collection.Hope you find some. 7y

ValerieAndBooks I have a Collette omnibus edition (not as pretty as your books), but it has sat unread for a long time! I know it has the Cheri books in it, not sure what else is in it. Now I should move it up my TBR! 8y

One of my #favefemalecharacters is Lea de Lonval, the beautiful but aging Parisian courtesan in these two books by Colette. #augustofpages #augustphotochallenge

LauraBrook I love your edition! Mine is the movie tie-in. 😕 8y
LeahBergen @LauraBrook Thank you! I found this for really cheap in a used bookstore. It made me go on the hunt for several more in the same series (Gigi is a really cool, 1950s pink!) 8y
BethFishReads My editions are from the 1970s. I love Colette 8y
LeahBergen @BethFishReads I've seen some of those (after I started buying these). They are so groovy 8y
