Not Forever, But For Now
Not Forever, But For Now | Chuck Palahniuk
11 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
From the bestselling author of Fight Club comes a hilarious horror satire about a family of professional killers responsible for the most atrocious events in history and the young brothers that are destined to take over. Meet Otto and Cecil. Two brothers growing up privileged in the Welsh countryside. They enjoy watching nature shows, playing with their pet pony, impersonating their Grandfather...and killing the help. Murder is the family business after all. Downton Abbey, this is not. However, its not so easy to continue the family legacy with the constant stream of threats and distractions seemingly leaping from the hedgerow. First there is the matter of the veritable cavalcade of escaped convicts that keep showing up at their door. Not to mention the debaucherous new tutor who has a penchant for speaking in Greek and dismembering sex dolls. Then theres Mummys burgeoning opioid addiction. And who knows where Daddy is. He just vanished one day after he and Mummy took a walk in the so called Ghost Forest. With Grandfather putting pressure on Otto to step up, it becomes clear that this will all end in only two ways: a nuclear apocalypse or just another day among the creeping thistle and tree peonies. And in a novel written by Chuck Palahniuk, either are equally possible.

One of my favorite authors. But this is not one of my favorite novels from him. The style of prose is still fantastic, the characters are suitably ghastly and the gross-outs are multiple. But this one did not connect with me as much as his other books do. I‘m not sure why; possibly enough of this went over my head, and I‘ve not experienced the full weight of the story. Recommended for fellow fans, but not for everyone.

What the heck did I just read?!

First time reading Palahniuk, and at first I was like ‘is this whole book going to be written in this voice?‘ The answer is yes, and it took me about 1/3 of the novel to appreciate it. At a certain point it washes over you, fully immerses you. You have to give Palahniuk credit for writing the whole thing in Cecil‘s POV without slipping up once; that takes some serious skill.

Recommended only for the adventurous.

Well, I knew what I was getting into. Uncomfortable & cartoonishly subversive, but it‘s bad when the brutality gets boring. Shorter would have preserved some punch. Preying on the weak. Lauding the brute. Oskar in “The Tin Drum.” Ágota Kristóf. Satirical, yes, but still, ouch. Where did all this pain come from? But such a great stylist & the language clips along. 20 “Once the breakable things are broken,” Otto said, “then everyone can relax.” 2023

26 pages in and not a shred of a story in sight. Not today, Chuck.

Caroline2 Argh I hate that 😒 1y
MissyD Ughhhh 1y
KadaGul @TheBookgeekFrau I was reading 📖 #ThisTimeAround by 3 Authors ✍️ the last story I couldn't finish even though I like #KathleenFuller. I just read the end and called it. 1y

TheBookgeekFrau @KadaGul I've done that, too 😄 1y
TheBookgeekFrau @Caroline2 @MissyD It's not the first time I've DNF'ed one of his books. But yeah, ughhh, bc when they're good, they're great. Such a disappointment 😣 1y
dabbe #hailthebail! 🤩🤩🤩 1y
TheBookgeekFrau @dabbe Damn Right! Reading time is too precious to squander 😁 1y
TieDyeDude I was afraid of that. He used to be a must-read for me, but I haven't even touched his last few... 1y
TheBookgeekFrau @TieDyeDude Me too! Then I started to wait until I found his stuff at library sales. Wish I'd done that with this one. However, If you didn't read The Invention of Sound, I highly recommend it! 1y
TieDyeDude @TheBookgeekFrau I listened to the audio of Invention of Sound, and I was very underwhelmed. I think at least a third of it was the narrator's fault, though 😜 1y
TheBookgeekFrau @TieDyeDude Bummer 🫤 That's part of the reason I don't listen to books. That, and even as a little tyke in circle time I needed to touch a book to absorb the story 🤣 1y

Got to start this before the rain came. I'm only a handful of chapters in and I feel a DNF comin' on 😕

EKonrad I read it all but kinda wish I hadn‘t. 🤦🏽‍♀️ 1y
TheBookgeekFrau @EKonrad I'm most likely going to cut my losses. So far what I've read is just plain stupid nonsense with no story. 1y
EKonrad That was my main complaint - there was basically no plot. Better to move on to other things, right? 1y
TheBookgeekFrau @EKonrad Absolutely! Reading time is too precious to waste on a book that has me going, "Whaaaa the ..?" It's not the first book of his I've bailed on. But I gotta say, the ones I've read through I just Loved! Except Snuff. I finished it, but it wasn't a favorite. 1y

Used to love his writing (as disturbing as it is), but this one just ended up being pretty boring to me. He still has his signature shock factor, but I needed more of a plot. #arc

Chuck has done it again. When I‘m reading his work, I wonder where the hell is this all going? And find myself in great need of a shower to wash the unseen filth from myself. Then I get to the end and think “Holy shit. I‘m rather glad I read that.” He has a way of making one face the darkest, most grotesque parts of one‘s own psyche, without judgment. For many, I think they take his writing too seriously in that they get put off and ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm don‘t understand that that‘s the whole point. You shouldn‘t be comfortable when you read his work. This isn‘t casual beach read fluff. It‘s meant to change you.

Maybe not forever, but for now.

My first ever Goodreads giveaway win!!! ❤️😱❤️ I‘m so excited! It‘ll definitely be the next book I read. I love Palahniuk, so I‘m really looking forward to this. 🥰

Used the Wyrmling‘s alphabet wall as a background. 😅❤️
