Best Strangers in the World: Stories from a Life Spent Listening | Ari Shapiro
7 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER"The Best Strangers in the World is a witty, poignant book that captures Ari Shapiro's love for the unusual, his pursuit of the unexpected, and his delight at connection against the odds."--Ronan Farrow, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist and New York Times-bestselling author of Catch and Kill and War on PeaceFrom the beloved host of NPR's All Things Considered, a stirring memoir-in-essays that is also a lover letter to journalism. In his first book, broadcaster Ari Shapiro takes us around the globe to reveal the stories behind narratives that are sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking, but always poignant. He details his time traveling on Air Force One with President Obama, or following the path of Syrian refugees fleeing war, or learning from those fighting for social justice both at home and abroad. As the self-reinforcing bubbles we live in become more impenetrable, Ari Shapiro keeps seeking ways to help people listen to one another; to find connection and commonality with those who may seem different; to remind us that, before religion, or nationality, or politics, we are all human. The Best Strangers in the World is a testament to one journalist's passion for Considering All Things--and sharing what he finds with the rest of us.

I only finished one nonfiction book in January, which is unusual for me. I really enjoyed listening to NPR reporter/host Ari Shapiro‘s memoir. He shares experiences from his early life and his reporting work, along with his sideline as a singer with Pink Martini. As an avid NPR listener, some of these stories were familiar, and it was nice to get more details and his reflections on them. The audiobook is great, as you might guess.

NPR host Ari Shapiro is so nice to spend time with! Obviously, the audiobook is the way to go with this one, as he narrates stories from his personal and professional life, with a heavy emphasis on public radio experiences. Gay, Jewish, musician, husband…listeners are treated to many stories of his reporting, band, and career. Thanks for the rec @Megabooks !!

I‘m not a radio listener, but this sounded interesting and it was! Ari is very engaging and I enjoyed hearing his story of how he ended up in journalism, and some anecdotes from his career reporting. He‘s a lot of fun.

Thanks for the recommendation @Megabooks 💜I wasn‘t really familiar with Ari Shapiro from NPR radio but that didn‘t stop me from enjoying his story about reporting news stories from around the globe, as well as dishing on his private life. Even though he‘s happily married to Mike, the Jewish mom in me kept wanting to fix him up with Andy Cohen 😄💕Audio read by Ari was fabulous.

AmyG Ha! Does Andy have a partner? I sometimes wonder if he has one….just tucked away…..who hates publicity. 2y
Cinfhen I don‘t think he does @AmyG but I wouldn‘t mind if he‘s keeping a partner hidden away- I thought I noticed some flirty banter between him and his bff Anderson Cooper 😉 2y
AmyG They always flirty banter. Anderson has a partner. Ha…why do I know so much about this? 🤣 2y
Megabooks So glad you enjoyed it! I figured you would especially because of his interest in music too! 2y
