Pickpick

I'd never heard of Adele Astaire before seeing the book online & reading it prompted me to look into her life further. It seems she was a gifted dancer & had a sense of comic timing onstage. Off-stage things weren't so good as she seems to have had a troubled personal life after retiring from dancing - she gave birth to 3 children but all of them died shortly after birth, plus there was the loss of her first husband at a rather young age. (cont)

OutsmartYourShelf This is a dual narrator story with alternate chapters from Adele & Violet. Although it is based on Adele Astaire's life, it is a fictional take & the author says that Violet is an amalgamation of several aspiring young stars of the time. I thought it was an interesting read but I wasn't really that interested in Violet's chapters. I understand that they allowed the author to show the other side of London life away from the glittering stage but 12mo
OutsmartYourShelf she was a bit nondescript compared to Adele. I did enjoy the cameo appearances from several famous people from history including the Prince of Wales (future Edward VIII - i.e. the one who abdicated), Deborah Mitford, & Kathleen 'Kick' Kennedy. 3.5🌟

TWs: war, death of a child, death of a spouse, alcoholism.

I am a fan of old Hollywood musicals, particularly those with Fed Astaire. This new book about his sister who also is a dancer has peaked my interest.

Love hearing what Adele Astaire is reading!! 👓 📚
It‘s so much fun hearing about books while reading a book!
I had never heard of this AA Milne book/play before !

rubyslippersreads This sounds like a fun book. We always hear about Fred, but not much about Adele. 1y
tpixie @rubyslippersreads yes! she was the natural dancer & a spitfire. The mother took her to New York City at eight years old because of her dancing skills. Fred came along with his mother while their father worked in Omaha Nebraska. He just started dancing because he was hanging out at the dance classes with her sister and mom! 1y

Starring Adele Astaire by Eliza Knight is a great look into the Other Astaire. Adele is the fire cracker and natural dancer in the family.
I certainly agree with her and Fred, the painting of her by Kokoschka does not do her justice!

I never pondered Adele Astaire's life after she & her iconic brother, Fred Astaire, stopped dancing together until William Morrow Books & Bibliolifestyle sent me a copy of 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞 by 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚 𝐊𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭. An “homage to a largely overlooked persona in Hollywood‘s illustrious line-up of characters“ (Heather Webb) & look at womanhood, friendship, artistry, passion, & perseverence. 06/06/23
