P. Djeli Clark is becoming an auto buy for me. This was much more tongue-in-cheek than I expected. There were some excellent action sequences, but the author was very smart in when to use blades vs. when to use words, which not only kept it from being overly violent but also from being predictable. I loved the twists and turns and at just over 200 pages, it tells the story it sets out to tell without dragging on.

Am I three novellas deep into P. Djèlí Clark‘s work? Yes I am. Have I possibly found myself an auto buy author? Yes! I am thoroughly enjoying everything that I have read.

I agree with Victor Lavalle - Clark is so inventive and talented. Really enjoying this one. Ring Shout is also terrific.

I love the worlds that P. Djèli Clark creates & this one was no exception. A dark fantasy with plenty of humour, our MC is an assassin of the dead cat tail assassin guild, & her night - which begins with the accepting of a contract to “shiv” someone during carnival, is about to go extremely sideways.

I hope we get to meet Eveen again, I‘d love to see her discover more about her past & to rebuild her destroyed book collection of heroic tales.

Sace I love his settings! 3mo

It is here! The new P Djeli Clark novel. It is always a treat to read his stories and he is one of the few male authors who consistently has female protagonist who also sound and feel real

I absolutely adore P. Djèlí Clark and this book did not disappoint! It's full of adventure, great characters, awesome world building, and lots of humor. What I love about Clark is that he can pack a lot into a shorter story. If you read Ring Shout, Master of Djinn, or any of his short stories, you know this is true. Thank you to Tor for an early copy of this book!

3/5⭐ I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

If we're supposed to root for the protagonist's final actions, the author's sense of justice is very different from mine. Eveen is a colorful character whose unorthodox methods & foul mouth drive this story. The worldbuilding is complex, the action smart, dark, & brutal.

This was a lot of fun and everything you need in a short fantasy. A badass POC female assassin is resurrected as part of a godlike ploy and has to uncover secrets, encounters with enemies, and treachery from all sides.

Hooked by the tagline, I was thrilled to get this ARC! “The Dead Cat Tail Assassins are not cats. Nor do they have tails. But they are most assuredly dead.“ Funny and dark, I was fully engaged and immersed in this world immediately. Clark's newest is fast paced with the total badass Eveen, who was also a bit of a book nerd.
