This isn‘t normally something I wouldn‘t have picked out myself but I asked the librarian to recommend just that. And she delivered. I actually liked it for a middle school series. Which she did warn me of. But good none the less.

A coworker sold me on this middle grade read with a “so it‘s rogue Girl Scouts exploring an underground city in New York” pitch and she was RIGHT, twelve year old me would have been absolutely in love with this book if it had existed when I was that age. Ananka is a great, smart, feminist protagonist and I enjoyed getting the story from her POV.

faelinwolf I love Kiki Strike! You should be sure to read all of them! 6y

"Thousands upon thousands of enormous rats stood before us, all perched on their hind legs like a miniature army. They had known we were coming, and I could have sworn I saw one licking its lips."

A fun middle-gradeish(?) mystery about the "Shadow City" in #underground New York. Hence, RATS. Narrator is about twelve; smart and bookish, having grown up reading everything in her parents' book-filled apartment. #SeptemBowie @Marchpane @Cinfhen

Billypar Love the quote 😲 And bookish main characters are the best, especially in children's lit. 7y
mklong I loved this series! 7y
batsy @mklong Yay! I loved the first two and found out there's a third I haven't read 😀 7y

batsy @Billypar Yeah! These girls are bookishly cool. But faced with a rat army I hope to pass out and remember nothing 😰 7y
Lindy I enjoyed this. Didn't remember the rats, but your quote captures the breezy style that I remember. 7y
batsy @Lindy Nice to hear other people have read it! I mainly remembered the rats 😁 7y
Lindy @batsy I am fortunate to live in a part of the world with no rats. That may be why I don't have any fear of them. I get a thrill when I spot one when I'm travelling; it's the same for me as spotting a hedgehog or a black squirrel or some other creature that I didn't know when I was growing up. The way rats (and snakes) are used as a horror element in adventure fantasy occasionally irks me because it's so obvious. 7y
batsy @Lindy Ah! Unfortunately we have rat troubles here. They can wreak some havoc and I have a deep and abiding fear of them. I know what you mean about the obviousness in using certain animals as a horror trope. I'm ok with snakes, for example :) 7y
Lindy @batsy 🐍❤️ 7y
readordierachel This sounds delightful! (except for the rats 🙈) 7y
nanneelizabeth I loved this book when I read it several years ago. 7y

I just found out there is a third one I never read!
